Pegasus Airlines Places Major Order for 100 Boeing 737 MAX-10 Aircraft

In a significant move for the aviation industry, Turkish budget carrier Pegasus Airlines has announced a monumental order for 100 Boeing 737 MAX-10 single-aisle aircraft, along with options for an additional 100 planes. This deal, revealed on December 19, 2024, is valued at approximately $36 billion at list prices and marks a revitalizing moment for Boeing’s 737 MAX lineup after a challenging year for the manufacturer.

This strategic acquisition aligns with Pegasus Airlines’ goals to expand and modernize its narrowbody fleet. Currently, the Istanbul-based airline operates a diverse fleet of 118 aircraft, which includes both Airbus and Boeing models. According to ch-aviation, Pegasus operates six Airbus A320s, 46 A320neos, 57 A321neos, and nine 737-800s. This new order for Boeing 737 MAX-10s complements Pegasus’s existing commitment to Airbus, which includes an outstanding order for 52 A321neos.

Advantages of the Boeing 737 MAX-10

The Boeing 737 MAX-10 is the largest variant in the 737 MAX family, designed to accommodate up to 230 passengers in a single-class configuration. Its operational range extends up to 3,100 nautical miles (5,740 km), slightly less than the Airbus A321neo, which boasts a range of 3,995 nautical miles (7,399 km). The new aircraft is anticipated to replace Pegasus’s aging A320-200 and Boeing 737-800 models, which average 9.3 and 10.5 years in age, respectively, while also facilitating future growth.

Öztürk further indicated that the initial 100 aircraft are firm orders, with the potential to convert the remaining 100 options into firm orders based on future market conditions and fleet requirements.

This order signals a noteworthy pivot back toward Boeing for Pegasus Airlines, which had favored Airbus aircraft in recent years. Founded in 1990 with Boeing 737-400s, the airline had transitioned to a predominantly Airbus fleet after a substantial order for 114 A320neo family aircraft in 2012.

With the rise of low-cost carriers boosting regional connectivity, the Boeing 737 MAX-10 is set to play a crucial role in helping Pegasus Airlines expand its reach across Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa. Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook forecasts nearly 7,900 deliveries of single-aisle airplanes to European and Central Asian operators over the next two decades.

This order not only enhances Pegasus Airlines’ fleet but also aligns with Boeing’s National Aerospace Initiative, launched in partnership with the Turkish government in 2017. Öztürk mentioned that this agreement creates new production and export opportunities for Turkish manufacturers and the broader aviation sector.

Industry Impact and Future Prospects

The recent order for 200 Boeing 737 MAX-10 aircraft has raised the total orders for the MAX variant to over 1,200 jets. Before Pegasus’s announcement, the MAX-10 had already garnered 1,109 confirmed orders from various airlines, including notable commitments from United Airlines and Ryanair.

Pegasus Airlines currently operates as a low-cost carrier, serving 144 destinations worldwide, including 35 domestic routes within Turkey and 109 international routes across 53 countries.
