Air India and Kenya Airways Launch New Codeshare Partnership to Enhance Travel Between India and Africa
Air India, the national airline of India owned by the Tata Group, has joined forces with Kenya Airways, one of Africa’s leading carriers, to introduce a new codeshare partnership. Announced on January 30, 2025, this strategic collaboration aims to broaden travel options between India and Africa, reinforcing the existing interline agreement and enhancing connectivity for passengers.
The new codeshare agreement allows travelers from both airlines to enjoy a seamless travel experience with a unified ticketing system and a single baggage policy. This development promises to make international travel easier and more efficient for passengers flying between these two vibrant regions.
Enhanced Connectivity Through Codeshare Agreement
As part of this partnership, Air India will feature its ‘AI’ flight prefix on Kenya Airways’ twice-daily Boeing 737 flights connecting Nairobi and Mumbai. This arrangement enables passengers traveling from Nairobi and other destinations to connect to various routes operated by Air India. Some notable destinations accessible via Mumbai include:
- Bangkok, Thailand
- Colombo, Sri Lanka
- Dhaka, Bangladesh
- Malé, The Maldives
- Melbourne, Australia
- Singapore
In addition to these connections, travelers can also utilize Air India’s direct Boeing 787 Dreamliner service between Nairobi and Delhi, accessing numerous other destinations in India.
Expanding Travel Options Across Africa and India
The interline agreement between Air India and Kenya Airways also facilitates seamless travel on a single itinerary. Passengers can connect to 28 African destinations, including:

- Dar Es Salaam

- Seychelles
- Kilimanjaro

Similarly, travelers from India can reach 15 major Indian cities, such as:

Strategic Goals and Future Expansion
Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer of Air India, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “Deepening our partnership with Kenya Airways aligns perfectly with Air India’s strategic vision of expanding our global footprint." He further noted that this codeshare will greatly benefit passengers and contribute to the growth of air travel between India and Africa.
Julius Thairu, Chief Commercial and Customer Officer of Kenya Airways, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting that it opens up significant opportunities for passengers and enhances convenience in travel.
Both airlines plan to gradually add more destinations to their codeshare agreement, marking the beginning of a promising relationship that aims to enhance air travel connectivity between India and Africa.
