Air India and Lufthansa Expand Codeshare to 60 Cities
Air India and Lufthansa Expand Codeshare Partnership to Enhance Connectivity Between India and Europe
Air India and Germany’s Lufthansa Group have announced a significant expansion of their codeshare partnership, aimed at enhancing flight options and connectivity for travelers between the Indian Subcontinent and Europe. This expanded agreement will also see Air India entering into a new codeshare arrangement with Austrian Airlines, further broadening the existing collaborations with both Lufthansa and Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS).
Key Benefits of the Expanded Codeshare Agreement
The newly expanded relationship will introduce nearly 60 additional codeshare routes, linking cities across 12 locations in India to 26 European destinations. This expansion increases the total number of codeshare routes between Air India, Lufthansa, and SWISS from 55 to almost 100. Moreover, the new agreement with Austrian Airlines will add 26 new codeshare routes, significantly enhancing travel options for passengers.
Travel Options and Destinations
Starting February 20, 2025, Air India will offer customers access to a total of 26 destinations in Europe, as well as three destinations in the Americas, through three major Lufthansa Group gateways: Frankfurt, Vienna, and Zurich. The Air India ‘AI’ designator code will be applied to all codeshare services, facilitating seamless travel for passengers.
Additionally, Lufthansa Group customers will benefit from connectivity to Air India’s domestic services across 15 major Indian cities, including:
- Ahmedabad
- Amritsar
- Bengaluru
- Bhubaneswar
- Chennai
- Delhi
- Goa (Mopa and Dabolim)
- Hyderabad
- Indore
- Kochi
- Kolkata
- Mumbai
- Pune
- Thiruvananthapuram
Furthermore, Lufthansa Group carriers will include their designator codes on Air India’s international flights to three key destinations: Kathmandu (Nepal), Melbourne, and Sydney (Australia).
Increased Flight Options
The expanded partnership means that flights currently operated by both Air India and Lufthansa Group between India and Germany or Switzerland will now be part of the codeshare agreement. For instance, travelers between Delhi and Frankfurt will have three daily flight options each way under ‘LH’ flight numbers, including two flights operated by Air India and one by Lufthansa. Both airlines plan to progressively add more destinations to this codeshare agreement, pending regulatory approvals.
Statements from Airline Executives
Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer of Air India, expressed, “Our goal is to enable our customers to travel from any corner of the world to another via Air India and its partner airlines. The expansion of our partnership with Lufthansa Group is a step in that direction, and we are pleased to take this long-standing relationship to the next level.”
Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group, added, “We are thrilled to strengthen our partnership with Air India and elevate the travel experience for our joint customers.
