Air New Zealand Welcomes First Upgraded Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner: A New Era of In-Flight Experience
Air New Zealand has officially taken delivery of its first upgraded Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, marking a significant milestone in enhancing passenger comfort and experience. After a comprehensive 184-day refurbishment in Singapore, this aircraft is set to redefine air travel for the airline’s customers. The upgraded Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, ZK-NZH, arrived in Auckland on April 16, 2025, and is the first of its kind to undergo a world-first, full nose-to-tail retrofit.
A Major Upgrade for Air New Zealand’s Fleet
The retrofitting of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is part of Air New Zealand’s commitment to providing an exceptional travel experience. According to Jeremy O’Brien, Air New Zealand’s Chief Commercial Officer, “Seeing the first of our 14 Dreamliners to undergo this transformation arrive home is a huge moment for our people, our customers, and the future of Air New Zealand.” The new upgrade features all-new cabin interiors, which include:
- Business Premier Luxe seats for enhanced comfort
- Redesigned Business Premier cabin
- Upgraded Premium Economy and Economy cabins
Final Preparations Before Launch
Before welcoming its first passengers in mid-May 2025, the upgraded Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will undergo final preparations. These will include testing the new inflight entertainment system and conducting a complete crew ground trial to ensure seamless onboard service. This meticulous process is essential to guarantee that every aspect of the passenger experience is refined.
Future Retrofits and Enhancements
Air New Zealand is not stopping with just one upgraded aircraft. The second Boeing 787-9 is currently in Singapore for refurbishment, with a total of seven aircraft expected to be completed by the end of 2025. By the end of 2026, all 14 Boeing 787-9s in the fleet will feature the new cabin layouts, further elevating the airline’s offerings.
