Lufthansa (LH) continues to stand out as one of the few airlines operating the iconic Airbus A380 superjumbo aircraft, providing a unique service between Europe and New York City. Recently, I had the opportunity to travel on flight LH410, a midday service connecting Munich to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). This article explores my experience onboard the A380, focusing on the journey, service, and areas for improvement.

The Process on the Ground

Arriving in Munich from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), I faced some complexity during my transfer. Passengers were shuttled to the terminal by bus, and I needed to navigate to the non-Schengen satellite terminal. With only a one-hour layover, I was anxious about the timing. Fortunately, the passport control process took about 15 minutes, allowing me to reach gate L28 in the USA-bound section of Terminal 2 without a hitch.

Upon arrival, I was selected for secondary screening, which lasted around 10 minutes and was conducted efficiently. The aircraft for my transatlantic journey, registered as D-AIMB, was the second A380 delivered to Lufthansa fourteen years ago. Due to a disability requiring extra boarding time, I pre-boarded after a brief wait, giving me a few minutes to settle before general boarding commenced.

Pre-Departure Experience

As the aircraft doors closed, we pushed back 15 minutes ahead of schedule. After a brief wait on the taxiway, we took off on time. In-flight service began promptly after reaching cruising altitude, with a small snack packet and a selection of beverages offered. I opted for a refreshing tomato juice to complement my journey.

Significant Issues with In-Flight Entertainment

I took this opportunity to explore the in-flight entertainment (IFE) system, which unfortunately showed its age. This particular A380 had not undergone refurbishment, having been reintroduced as a contingency measure post-pandemic. As a result, the IFE interface was sluggish, with many popular movies unavailable. Additionally, the absence of remote controls made navigating the system a frustrating experience, especially during an eight-hour flight.

Areas Where Lufthansa Excels

Despite the IFE issues, the catering was a highlight of the journey. I had ordered a special lactose-free meal, which exceeded my expectations. The meal included a delicious vegetable curry with rice, served with metal cutlery for a premium touch. Shortly before landing, we were offered a surprisingly flavorful sandwich, showcasing the culinary efforts of Lufthansa’s catering team.

Reflections on the A380 Experience

The remainder of the flight was smooth, with only occasional turbulence. However, my overall impression of the A380 experience was mixed. Although the aircraft is renowned for its design and spaciousness, it felt outdated, particularly in comparison to newer models. To enhance the experience, Lufthansa should consider updating the A380 fleet, potentially adopting the Allegris treatment. With the anticipated arrival of the Boeing 777X, the future of the superjumbo in Lufthansa’s fleet remains uncertain.

Would I recommend flying on Lufthansa’s A380? Perhaps, especially for those who wish to experience the unique upper deck seating. However, travelers should be prepared for a less modern experience compared to what Lufthansa offers on other aircraft.
