During my recent trip to the United States, I had the opportunity to fly United Airlines’ domestic First Class on a route from Newark to Chicago. This experience offered unique insights into the airline’s premium service, especially following an unexpected aircraft change that turned my journey into a delightful surprise.

An Unexpected Change of Aircraft Enhances the Experience

Upon checking in, I discovered that my flight had been switched from a Boeing 757 to a 777-200ER. Initially, I felt a hint of disappointment over missing the chance to fly on a rarer aircraft. However, my spirits lifted when I learned that the inbound leg from Chicago would feature United’s new Polaris business-class product. This change promised an upgraded experience, but there was one catch that I would soon uncover.

After arriving in Chicago on the same aircraft in Economy class—seated at the rear in 47L—I found the seat surprisingly comfortable. The in-flight entertainment (IFE) system was modern and user-friendly, making it an ideal choice for long-haul flights.

Waiting at O’Hare: United Club Lounge Experience

Once at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), I spent an hour in the United Club Lounge. It’s important to note that, unlike many international airlines, US domestic First Class typically does not include complimentary lounge access. To enjoy this perk, I purchased a $30 pass through the United app.

Although the lounge was overcrowded due to peak travel times and the Polaris lounge being closed for refurbishment, it provided a more relaxing atmosphere compared to the gate area. Despite having to stand while enjoying breakfast, the lounge offered a welcome reprieve from the bustling terminal.

Before takeoff, I enjoyed a pre-departure drink—a nice touch for short-haul flights. I opted for both water and Prosecco, but I would suggest that United switch to glass cups instead of plastic to enhance the overall experience.

During the flight, the onboard service included a refreshing Sprite served in a glass, along with snacks like popcorn, almonds, and a flapjack. While European airlines often provide a more elaborate dining experience, integrating some of these elements into the Polaris service could elevate the domestic experience significantly.

In-Flight Entertainment: A Quality Selection

The flight itself was relatively uneventful, but I took the opportunity to watch a fascinating documentary about the Navy Aerial Demo Team, the Blue Angels. The excellent sound quality of the headphones made for an enjoyable viewing experience. However, I did encounter a hiccup when I called for cabin crew service but did not receive assistance, leading me to purchase my own bottle of water at the airport.
