Air India Expands Fleet with 100 New Airbus Aircraft Order

GURUGRAM – Air India, under the ownership of Tata Group, has confirmed a major order for 100 new Airbus aircraft as part of its aggressive fleet expansion strategy. This order, which includes 10 widebody A350s and 90 narrowbody A320 Family aircraft (including A321neo models), is set to enhance the airline’s operational capabilities significantly.

This latest acquisition builds on Air India’s previous order of 470 aircraft with Airbus and Boeing last year, bringing the total Airbus order to 350. Previously, Air India had ordered 250 aircraft, consisting of 40 A350s and 210 A320 Family models.

Strategic Growth with Airbus Aircraft

In conjunction with the aircraft purchase, Air India has also selected Airbus’ Flight Hour Services-Component (FHS-C) to ensure effective maintenance for its expanding A350 fleet. This maintenance contract is designed to optimize fleet reliability and performance through comprehensive engineering services and integrated component support.

Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, emphasized the strategic rationale behind this expansion. He pointed out that the rapid growth of passenger traffic in India, coupled with improving infrastructure and a burgeoning global young population, are key factors driving this fleet growth.

“By acquiring these additional 100 Airbus aircraft, Air India is setting itself on a trajectory for greater growth, aligning with our mission to build a world-class airline that connects India to the globe,” stated Chandrasekaran.

Commitment to Partnership and Innovation

Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus, expressed enthusiasm about the ongoing collaboration: “We are dedicated to supporting Air India’s ‘Vihaan.AI’ transformation plan under Tata’s leadership,” acknowledging the impressive growth potential of the Indian aviation sector.

A Comprehensive Fleet Strategy

Currently, Air India has a total of 344 Airbus aircraft on order, including six A350 widebody aircraft that have already been received. The A350 represents a significant technological advancement for Air India, making it the first Indian airline to operate this cutting-edge model. Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, these aircraft deliver exceptional fuel efficiency and long-range capabilities.

The A350s are currently serving non-stop routes from Delhi to major international cities such as London and New York, offering passengers an enhanced flying experience.

In addition to its Airbus order, Air India has a separate order with Boeing for 220 widebody and narrowbody aircraft, with 185 still pending delivery. This comprehensive fleet strategy positions the airline for substantial growth and operational enhancements.

The A320 Family fleet, which is equipped with CFM LEAP 1-A engines, forms the backbone of Air India’s domestic and short-haul operations, delivering operational efficiency and an exceptional travel experience for millions of customers.
