Noida International Airport (NIA), also referred to as Jewar Airport, has successfully conducted a vital trial run for aircraft operations on December 9, 2024, at 11 AM. This significant milestone is a key step towards the airport’s anticipated commercial launch, scheduled for April 17, 2025. The trial run is essential for validating the airport’s operational capabilities, ensuring it meets the rigorous standards required for passenger flights.

An aircraft from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) executed a detailed landing procedure, marking a pivotal moment in the airport’s preparations. The trial involved complex aerial maneuvers, lasting approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, during which the aircraft collected critical operational data for analysis. This data will be submitted to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for review.

The groundwork for this trial began in October 2024, when calibration of the airport systems was completed using a Beech King Air 360 ER aircraft. This calibration confirmed the operational status of both the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and the Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) systems.

Next Steps for Noida International Airport

Following the trial run, the process is set to continue until December 15, after which the NIA will submit an application to the DGCA for an aerodrome license.

UPDATE (December 9, 2024, 2:40 PM IST): IndiGo Airlines (6E) successfully performed a technical trial run using a fully crewed passenger aircraft. This operational assessment focused on evaluating essential aviation infrastructure through precise takeoff and landing maneuvers.

Complementing Delhi International Airport

Noida International Airport is positioned to enhance India’s aviation landscape, aiming to connect 25 domestic routes, three international services, and two cargo flights across 25 Indian cities. While the DGCA has authorized domestic operations, final clearance from the central government remains pending, complicating the launch timeline.

Flight trials without passengers are scheduled from November 15 to December 15, utilizing a public-private partnership model. Dr. Arunvir Singh, CEO of NIA, confirmed initial approval for 25 domestic flights, with plans to expand based on passenger demand.

YIAPL, a subsidiary of Zurich AG, is closely monitoring timelines for airport clearances. The CEO highlighted the importance of meeting the April 17 deadline to avoid significant delays in international approvals and IATA slot allocations.

Furthermore, IndiGo Airlines and Akasa Air are set to conduct extensive flight tests to ensure the runway’s functionality and operational systems before the airport’s official launch. However, the Uttar Pradesh government has imposed a ₹21 crore fine on NIA for the delay in operations from the originally planned September 2024 to the revised April 2025 launch date.
