MUMBAI – Akasa Air, the airline backed by the late Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, is under scrutiny as pilots raise serious allegations regarding harassment, unfair practices, and safety concerns. In a letter addressed to the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) on December 10, 2024, numerous pilots voiced their frustrations, highlighting a troubling work environment at the Mumbai-based carrier.

Akasa Air Pilots Speak Out: Key Concerns

The letter details grievances from a total of 84 pilots, with many resigning abruptly due to the airline’s management practices under Captain Floyd Gracious and his team. Pilots claim that the management has fostered a “demoralizing and hostile training environment” marked by biased and unprofessional behavior.

The pilots outlined three primary areas of concern:

  • Harassment and Unfair Training Practices: Training sessions led by DGCA-designated examiners have reportedly included instances of harassment and humiliation. Specific trainers, such as Kunal Khajuria and Suraj Bhatia, have been accused of biased assessments and unprofessional conduct, contributing to a toxic workplace atmosphere.

  • High Failure Rate Among Pilots: Alarmingly, Akasa Air has failed 216 pilots during simulator and aircraft evaluations, with no failures reported among Captain Gracious’s associates. This discrepancy raises questions about the fairness and objectivity of the airline’s assessment protocols.

  • Violation of DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements: The letter alleges that Akasa Air has not adhered to the DGCA’s requirements for fair and transparent assessments. Concerns were raised about the promotion of individuals lacking adequate STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) experience to critical roles, despite a history of safety violations.

Demanding Accountability: Pilots Seek Action

In response to these alarming concerns, Akasa Air pilots have requested several actions from the Honorable Minister of Civil Aviation:

  2. Review of Examiners: A thorough evaluation of DGCA-designated trainers to ensure professionalism and impartiality.
  3. Enforcement of DGCA Standards: Strict adherence to DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements to protect trainees and ensure fair assessments.
  4. Safety Audit: An audit to address issues regarding unfit pilots in critical positions.

The pilots believe that intervention from the Minister will foster fairness, transparency, and safety within Akasa Air, thus maintaining the integrity of India’s aviation sector.

Legal Action Against Pilots

In a related development, Akasa Air has pursued legal action against 43 pilots who left the company for other airlines without completing their contractual notice periods. The airline seeks approximately ₹22 crore in compensation, citing operational disruptions and revenue losses due to the abrupt departures.

An Akasa Air representative stated, “We have initiated legal action exclusively against a limited group of pilots who neglected their responsibilities and departed without fulfilling their obligatory contractual notice period.”
