In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability, easyJet has become the first airline globally to trial a revolutionary lightweight paint designed to reduce emissions and enhance fuel efficiency. Announced on January 3, 2025, this initiative, developed in collaboration with Mankiewicz Aviation Coatings, aims to lessen the weight of easyJet aircraft, contributing to a greener aviation industry.
The Benefits of Lightweight Paint in Aviation
The new lightweight paint solution not only requires less paint for the airline’s distinctive livery but also offers significant environmental benefits. According to easyJet, this innovative approach has the potential to save up to 1,296 tons of fuel annually and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 4,095 tons once fully implemented across its fleet by the end of 2029.
Key Features of easyJet’s Lightweight Paint
- Weight Reduction: Each aircraft equipped with the new paint will weigh approximately 27 kilograms less.
- Fuel Savings: The lighter paint contributes directly to fuel efficiency, enabling easyJet to reduce its carbon footprint.
- Fleet-Wide Application: Currently, 38 easyJet aircraft have been painted with this new solution, with plans for a complete transition by 2030.
Lahiru Ranasinghe, easyJet’s Director of Sustainability, emphasized the airline’s commitment to exploring innovative solutions to minimize operational impact. "While this forms a small part of a bigger strategy, formulating a new lightweight paint with our partners exemplifies how we’re assessing every single part of our operation to find efficiency gains," he stated.
Collaboration and Testing
easyJet is partnering with MAAS Aviation, a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) specialist based in Dublin, to implement the new paint at its facility in Maastricht. The early results from the 38 aircraft already coated with the lightweight paint indicate promising fuel savings due to their reduced weight.
Continued Efforts in Decarbonization
easyJet is dedicated to reducing its environmental impact and has recently deployed a new technology called Descent Profile Optimization (DPO) across its fleet. This initiative has led to record reductions in carbon intensity performance for fiscal year 2024, further underscoring the airline’s commitment to sustainability.
