Japan Airlines Bids Farewell to Boeing 777 with Final London Flight
Japan Airlines Says Goodbye to Boeing 777-300ER, Welcomes Airbus A350-1000
Japan Airlines (JAL) recently marked a significant transition in its fleet by retiring the Boeing 777-300ER from its Tokyo Haneda (HND) to London Heathrow (LHR) route. This change, effective January 2, 2025, signals the end of an era for the iconic aircraft, which has been a staple of JAL’s international operations since its introduction in 2004. With the arrival of the modern Airbus A350-1000, JAL is embracing a new chapter in air travel.
Japan Airlines Retires the Boeing 777
The Boeing 777-300ER joined Japan Airlines’ fleet in 2004 as a replacement for the Boeing 747-400. Over the years, it became synonymous with JAL’s long-distance routes, including those to New York (JFK) and London (LHR). The airline acquired a total of 13 units between 2004 and 2009, with the final Boeing 777-300ER, registration JA739J, completing its last international flight on January 1, 2025.
- Final Flight Details:

JAL Introduces the New Airbus A350-1000
In place of the retired Boeing 777-300ER, Japan Airlines is introducing the Airbus A350-1000. The airline has ordered 13 units, with seven already delivered and four more expected by 2025.
- Key Features of the A350-1000:
- Seating Capacity: 239 passengers
- Cabin Classes: 6 in First Class, 54 in Business Class, 24 in Premium Economy, and 155 in Economy
- Enhanced Comfort: Full-flat beds in Business Class, electrically reclining seats in Premium Economy, and 16-inch 4K monitors
- Unique Design: First Class features no overhead bins above seats for a more spacious feel
The A350-1000 is not only designed for passenger comfort but also focuses on fuel efficiency and noise reduction, aligning with JAL’s sustainability goals. The new aircraft will gradually take over key international routes, including the Haneda-New York route starting in January 2024, followed by Dallas-Fort Worth in April and London later in October.
JAL’s fleet renewal strategy is progressing rapidly, with plans to operate 11 A350 aircraft by 2025. The airline continues to expand its A350 operations, prioritizing high-demand routes to Europe and North America.
