airBaltic Reveals Winning Livery on 50th Airbus A220-300

airBaltic Unveils Unique Livery for Its 50th Airbus A220-300: A Tribute to the Baltic Spirit

Latvian airline airBaltic has revealed an eye-catching new livery for its upcoming 50th Airbus A220-300, set to be delivered in February 2025. This specially designed livery, created through a public competition, showcases the rich culture and heritage of the Baltic States. The announcement was made at the Airbus final assembly plant in Mirabel, Canada, marking a significant milestone for the airline.

The competition, launched in November 2023, invited contributions from the public, frequent flyers, artists, and designers. Over 840 entries were submitted, and a voting process that engaged more than 28,000 airBaltic Club loyalty program members led to the selection of 21 shortlisted designs. The winning design received over 30% of the total votes and will feature prominently on the airline’s 50th Airbus A220-300, alongside a €3,000 ($3,278) gift certificate for the designer.

A Symbol of Baltic Unity

The new aircraft, registered as YL-ABX, will proudly display an artistic representation of the Latvian flag, combined with unique elements that symbolize all three Baltic States: Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. The striking color scheme features sweeping green and red lines along the fuselage, while the wingtips and engine cowlings maintain airBaltic’s signature green.

In a statement, airBaltic described the design as depicting "a girl soaring through the clouds with long, flowing hair crowned by a traditional wreath, proudly featuring the Latvian flag." Additional elements, including a ladybug, a swallow, and a stork, draw inspiration from the region’s rich heritage and natural beauty. The final design was refined by airBaltic to meet the technical specifications required for the aircraft.

Innovative Painting Techniques

The painting process for this special livery took 18 days, utilizing 21 colors and innovative stencil overlay techniques for the first time in the Airbus A220 paint shop. "This design not only highlights our commitment to creativity but also celebrates the cultural richness of the Baltic region," said Martin Gauss, President and CEO of airBaltic.

Gauss further emphasized the significance of this milestone: "More than eight years ago, we became the global launch operator of the Airbus A220-300. This aircraft type has become the backbone of our operations, and this new addition brings us closer to our goal of operating a fleet of 100 A220-300s by 2030."

Leading the Aviation Industry

airBaltic is currently the largest A220 customer in Europe and the world’s leading operator of the A220-300 model. The airline’s commitment to this efficient aircraft type has resulted in high passenger satisfaction ratings. Benoît Schultz, CEO of Airbus Canada, praised airBaltic’s leadership in the aviation sector, noting that Airbus products connect over 160 million passengers globally.

The new A220-300 will join the airline’s existing fleet of 49 active A220 aircraft, each with an average age of 4.3 years and capable of accommodating 148 passengers in a single-class configuration. airBaltic operates more than 130 routes from its bases in Riga, Tallinn, and Vilnius, connecting the Baltic States to over 70 destinations across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Caucasus.
