IndiGo Plans Business Class on 45 Aircraft by 2026

IndiGo Airlines Expands Business Class Offering with IndiGoStretch

In a strategic move to enhance its premium travel options, IndiGo Airlines (6E), India’s largest low-cost carrier, is expanding its business class service, IndiGoStretch, across major metro routes. With the aim of deploying this upgraded service on 45 aircraft by 2026, the airline is responding to a positive market reception and increasing demand for premium air travel. The initiative begins with the high-traffic Delhi-Mumbai route, signaling a significant shift in IndiGo’s service offerings.

IndiGoStretch Business Class on 45 Aircraft

IndiGo plans to roll out IndiGoStretch on 45 aircraft within the next 14 months, targeting 12 key routes and over 260 daily flights. This premium service features spacious recliner seating, providing added comfort for travelers. By January 2025, all Delhi-Mumbai flights will include IndiGoStretch, followed by expansions to the Delhi-Bengaluru and Delhi-Chennai routes by March 2025. Ultimately, IndiGo aims to cover most metro-to-metro routes by the end of 2025, with an aspiration to offer premium capacity on approximately 10% of its fleet.

  • Current Fleet: IndiGo operates 410 aircraft, with plans to increase this number to over 450 by 2026.

IndiGo’s Competitive Strategy Against Air India

As IndiGo enters the competitive business class market, it directly challenges Air India Group’s dominance. Air India has announced plans to operate 94 business-class aircraft by June 2025, primarily focusing on international routes. IndiGo’s strategy is to attract passengers seeking alternative premium travel experiences, especially in light of recent fare increases in the premium class market.

IndiGo has received a positive initial response to IndiGoStretch since its launch on November 14, with 10 daily business-class routes currently available. Starting ticket prices are ₹18,000, which are more competitive compared to Air India’s ₹21,000 fares.

Premium Air Travel Expansion on Key Routes

IndiGo has confirmed that business class seats will be available on the Delhi-Bengaluru route starting January 10, further enhancing its premium passenger experience. Following the successful launch on the Delhi-Mumbai route, IndiGoStretch will include all 15 daily Delhi-Bengaluru flights by March 2024. CEO Pieter Elbers has indicated that the airline plans to serve a total of 12 Indian routes with IndiGoStretch, with announcements for the Delhi-Chennai route expected soon.
