Pakistan International Airlines Resumes Flights to Paris After Four-Year Hiatus

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has officially resumed its flights to Paris, marking a significant milestone after a four-year suspension. This exciting development comes on the heels of the European Union lifting its airspace ban on the airline last year. The first flight departed from Islamabad International Airport (ISB) on January 10, 2025, at midday, with the Boeing 777-200ER aircraft scheduled to arrive at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) at 16:23 local time.

Celebrating the Return to European Skies

To commemorate this momentous occasion, PIA welcomed passengers at Islamabad Airport with a festive atmosphere that included a replica of the Arc de Triomphe. The aircraft was adorned with a painted tail featuring the Eiffel Tower, and the nose of the plane showcased the message "I love Paris." This celebration emphasizes PIA’s commitment to reconnecting with European travelers.

Background of the Ban Lift

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) announced the lifting of the ban on November 29, 2024, after PIA met the EU’s rigorous safety standards. The original ban was imposed in June 2020 due to serious safety concerns following a tragic incident involving a PIA Airbus A320, which crashed on May 22, 2020. This devastating event claimed the lives of 97 out of 99 people onboard, and also resulted in injuries to several individuals on the ground.

Flight Operations and Future Plans

PIA will now operate two flights weekly between Paris and Islamabad, making it the only airline in the world connecting these two capital cities. Looking ahead, PIA plans to reinstate previously stored aircraft into service, including eight Boeing 777s, 12 Airbus A320s, and three ATRs. According to a December 2024 statement from a PIA spokesperson, the airline is focused on expanding its network with potential flights to the UK and Europe, while maintaining a strong on-time performance that exceeds 90%.
