Alaska Airlines is set to enhance its international offerings with the launch of nonstop flights between Seattle and Seoul, South Korea, beginning September 12, 2025. This new route is part of a broader expansion strategy that will also include direct flights to Tokyo, Japan. Utilizing the modern Airbus A330-200 aircraft operated by its partner airline, Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines aims to solidify its presence as a major international carrier from the West Coast.
Seattle as a Growing International Hub
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) has long been a cornerstone for Alaska Airlines, serving as the largest airline hub on the West Coast. The introduction of the Seattle-Seoul route adds to the airline’s impressive portfolio, which already includes 104 nonstop destinations across North America and beyond. With plans to serve at least 12 international destinations by 2030, Alaska Airlines is positioning Seattle as a global gateway.
Strategic Timetable Around Chuseok
The Seattle to Seoul flights, covering a distance of 5,216 miles (8,345 km), are strategically scheduled to start just before Chuseok, or Korean Thanksgiving Day, which takes place in early October. This timing is ideal for travelers looking to reconnect with family and friends in South Korea. Andrew Harrison, Chief Commercial Officer at Alaska Airlines, emphasized the convenience of this service, stating, "With our robust network, we can connect our guests through our global gateway in Seattle for convenient nonstop service to Seoul and Tokyo."
Flight Details and Capacity
Initially, Alaska Airlines will operate flights from Seattle to Seoul five times a week. Departures from Seattle will take place at 3:25 PM local time from Wednesday to Sunday, arriving in Seoul the following day at 6:50 PM. The return flights will leave Seoul at 8:50 PM, landing in Seattle at 3:00 PM the same day. Each Airbus A330-200 can accommodate 278 passengers in a three-class configuration, ensuring a comfortable travel experience.
Competitive Landscape in the Seattle-Seoul Market
The Seattle-Seoul route is already competitive, with Delta Air Lines, Asiana Airlines, and Korean Air providing established daily services. Each of these airlines offers a larger capacity compared to Alaska Airlines, which will initially provide 1,390 seats each way. However, Alaska Airlines will leverage its strong Seattle hub and extensive onward connections to enhance its competitive edge.
