Air India Set to Reintroduce First-Class Seats on Airbus A350-1000: A New Era of Luxury Travel

GURUGRAM – Air India (AI) is making a significant move to reintroduce first-class seating on its Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, aiming to attract premium travelers in key global markets. This strategic decision underscores Air India’s commitment to enhancing its luxury travel offerings, positioning itself competitively among the world’s leading airlines.

With a fleet expansion to 202 aircraft, including 67 wide-body planes, Air India is investing heavily in both new acquisitions and retrofitting existing aircraft. Targeting high-demand routes, particularly to premium destinations like London and New York, the airline is set to elevate its travel experience for discerning passengers.

Air India’s decision to incorporate first-class cabins on its Airbus A350-1000 jets is a testament to the airline’s ambition to lead in the luxury travel sector. Nipun Aggarwal, Air India’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasizes that first-class products remain vital, serving as a benchmark for premium airlines on prominent international routes.

The upcoming A350-1000s, scheduled for delivery over the next two years, will feature these exclusive cabins, catering to the increasing demand for luxury travel options between major cities. Aggarwal notes that first class is not just an amenity but an “aspirational product” that defines the prestige of an airline.

With seating capacities ranging from 325 to 400, the A350-1000 and Boeing 777X will provide travelers with a seamless luxury experience on ultra-long-haul routes. The airline is particularly focused on lucrative markets, where demand for first-class services remains exceptionally strong.

Big Plans for Wide-Body Aircraft

Air India’s current wide-body fleet includes 27 Boeing 777s, 40 Boeing 787s, and six Airbus A350s. While some legacy Boeing 777s and leased aircraft already offer first-class cabins, plans are in place to retrofit all aircraft to ensure a consistent premium experience across the fleet.

The retrofitting process will commence with Boeing 787s this year, followed by upgrades to legacy A320 neos expected to conclude by mid-2025. These improvements will also apply to narrow-body aircraft, which make up 80% of Air India’s operations, ensuring modern amenities for domestic and short-haul international travelers.

Despite facing challenges like technical issues with its Boeing 777s, Air India remains steadfast in its commitment to optimize its fleet. Aggarwal acknowledged the performance hurdles but emphasized that the airline has implemented a strategic buffer system to minimize disruptions.

Air India’s Future Plans

Acquiring new wide-body aircraft presents challenges due to current market constraints. While Air India is open to leasing options, Aggarwal highlighted the complexities involved in integrating leased planes into the existing fleet. Deliveries from recent orders are expected to begin this year, with additional arrivals in the coming years, contingent upon Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) timelines.

To enhance customer loyalty, Air India is revamping its corporate and loyalty programs. The updated “Maharaja Club,” which currently has over 10.3 million members, will soon extend its offerings to Air India Express customers. Additionally, corporate partnerships, especially on metro routes where corporate traffic accounts for 25% of total passengers, are being expanded.

The merger with Vistara further strengthens Air India’s position, enabling improved pricing and customer experiences across metro-to-metro routes.
