IndiGo Airlines Gears Up for Operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport
NAVI MUMBAI – IndiGo Airlines (6E), India’s largest low-cost carrier (LCC), is making significant strides in preparation for its upcoming flight operations at the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). On January 17, 2025, a team of 40 members, including pilots, engineers, and cabin crew, successfully completed their orientation sessions, marking an important step towards operational readiness.
Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to follow a three-phase operational launch plan, with its inauguration scheduled for April 17, 2025. Domestic flights and cargo operations are expected to commence on May 15, 2025, followed by the initiation of international services in July 2025.

During their guided tour of NMIA, the IndiGo team conducted thorough inspections of the runway and airside facilities. This orientation comes on the heels of IndiGo’s historic test flight to NMIA on December 29, 2024, which utilized an 11.7-year-old Airbus A320 (VT-IFN) equipped with IAE engines. This test flight marked a significant milestone in the development of the airport.
Captains Karan Sahgal and Rahul Jain piloted the inaugural flight from Mumbai Airport (BOM), departing at 12:28 PM. The aircraft executed several calibration tests, including low approaches over the runway, before successfully landing at Navi Mumbai at 1:38 PM IST. This operation highlights IndiGo’s strategic expansion plans as it prepares to integrate NMIA into its flight network.
The successful test flight and the subsequent team orientation underscore IndiGo’s commitment to establishing comprehensive operations at Mumbai’s second international airport.
Operations to Start This Year
As the launch date approaches, IndiGo Airlines and Akasa Air (QP) are set to be the first carriers to offer services at NMIA. Air India (AI) plans to incorporate the facility into its network in later phases of operation.
IndiGo has also achieved a significant technical milestone by completing simulator validation for Draft RNP approaches at NMIA. This validation received approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) developed the approach procedures.
Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) CEO Arun Bansal shared key operational details regarding the new airport. Operations will commence with the southern runway, designated as 08/26, which has a capacity for 50 aircraft movements. The airport’s Terminal 1 is designed to accommodate 20 million passengers annually, significantly enhancing Mumbai’s aviation infrastructure.
Spanning 1,160 hectares, NMIA’s construction began in August 2021, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foundation stone ceremony on February 18, 2018. The airport represents AAHL’s ninth aviation facility in India, further expanding its portfolio of managed airports.
Bansal also mentioned that ongoing negotiations are taking place with Indian carriers for both domestic and international service offerings. The timeline for development continues to progress, with design work for Terminal 2 underway and construction set to begin in mid-2025, following the airport’s operational launch.
