MUMBAI – In a significant move for air travel in India, Air India Express, a subsidiary of Tata Group’s LCC, has announced the addition of 13 new city pairs to its network in January 2025. According to an exclusive analysis from Aviation All, Indian carriers have launched a total of 15 new city pairs and increased weekly flights by 166, demonstrating a robust recovery and growth in the aviation sector. Air India Express stands out as the most aggressive player in this expansion, adding 138 weekly flights across its new routes.

Air India Express Adds New Routes

Air India Express has strategically strengthened its presence in Eastern India by connecting Bhubaneswar to key cities such as Kochi, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Patna. The expansion doesn’t stop there; the airline has also introduced new connections from Bengaluru to Patna and Dammam. Hyderabad is set to benefit from three new destinations—Indore, Patna, and Phuket.

Other significant additions include:

• Chennai to Port Blair
• Mangaluru to Pune
• Trichy to Dammam
• Guwahati to Dimapur

Most of these routes will be serviced by Boeing 737-8 aircraft, with many sectors enjoying seven weekly flight frequencies, ensuring convenient travel options for passengers.

Other Airlines Expanding Their Routes

In addition to Air India Express, other carriers are also enhancing their route networks. Akasa Air (QP) has launched a Mumbai-Ayodhya route, focusing on religious tourism, with seven weekly departures using Boeing 737-8 aircraft. This service began on January 10, 2025.

Star Air (S5) is enhancing regional connectivity by introducing flights between Hyderabad and Jharsuguda, operating seven times weekly with ERJ 175 aircraft. This service commenced on January 1, 2025, further supporting connectivity in tier-2 cities.

Air India (AI) is also making waves with a comprehensive flight schedule enhancement centered on Prayagraj (IXD) from February 15 to February 28, 2025. This plan significantly boosts connectivity to major Indian cities.

• Delhi-Prayagraj: Six daily flights using Airbus A321 aircraft.
• Prayagraj-Ahmedabad: New service with A320neo aircraft.
• Bengaluru: Double daily connections via A320neo.
• Mumbai: Increased services to 21 weekly flights.
• Hyderabad: Daily connections using A320neo.
• Kolkata: Daily flights with A319 aircraft, pending schedule confirmation.
