Brussels Airlines Launches Atomium-Themed A320 Aircraft

Brussels Airlines Unveils New ‘Belgian Icons’ Livery Featuring the Atomium

Brussels Airlines has launched its latest special livery in the celebrated ‘Belgian Icons’ series, showcasing one of Belgium’s most iconic landmarks: the Atomium. Since its debut at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, the Atomium has captured the hearts of locals and tourists alike, becoming a must-see sight in the Belgian capital. This stunning new design not only highlights the beauty of the Atomium but also reflects the airline’s commitment to celebrating Belgian culture.

In August 2024, Brussels Airlines initiated a public competition to select this new livery, attracting approximately 900 creative submissions. After a rigorous selection process, which included a popular ballot that garnered over 50,000 votes, the winning design was announced in November 2024. The chosen design, crafted by Belgian architect Thomas Faes, impressed a panel of judges that included Brussels Airlines CEO Dorothea von Boxberg and various cultural figures.

The Creative Process Behind the Atomium Livery

The transformation of the aircraft into a flying tribute to the Atomium required significant effort: approximately 400 liters of paint and 2,400 hours of meticulous work. The aircraft, an Airbus A320 with the registration OO-SNM, was officially unveiled at an event held at the Brussels Airlines Maintenance & Engineering hangar.

  • Key highlights of the new livery:
    • Features the Atomium prominently on the aircraft’s exterior.
    • Cabin decor reflects the Atomium and its construction, enhancing the passenger experience.
    • Continues the tradition of the ‘Belgian Icons’ series, which has previously celebrated themes like Tintin, the Smurfs, and René Magritte.

Upcoming Flight Schedule and More

The first revenue flight for this newly adorned aircraft is scheduled for March 27, 2025, taking passengers from Brussels-Zaventem (BRU) to Prague (PRG). This launch marks another chapter in Brussels Airlines’ initiative to celebrate and promote Belgian culture through its fleet.
