Former American Airlines Flight Attendant Pleads Guilty to Child Exploitation Charges

BOSTON – In a shocking case that has raised concerns about safety on flights, a 37-year-old former American Airlines flight attendant, Estes Carter Thompson III, has pleaded guilty to charges related to the secret recording of underage girls in airplane lavatories. This disturbing incident highlights the importance of vigilance in protecting minors in public spaces.

On March 6, 2025, Thompson entered guilty pleas for attempted sexual exploitation of children and possession of child sexual abuse images depicting a prepubescent minor. His actions have led to significant legal ramifications and raised awareness about the need for stricter safety measures in the airline industry.

Details of the Incident

The investigation began when a 14-year-old girl reported a troubling encounter during a flight from Charlotte to Boston on September 2, 2023. After finding the main cabin lavatory occupied, Thompson directed her to the first-class restroom, claiming he needed to wash his hands and warning her about a supposedly broken toilet seat.

Upon entering, the young girl discovered red stickers on the toilet seat lid, which concealed Thompson’s iPhone used to record her. Demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, she photographed the hidden device before leaving the lavatory.

Attorney Paul Llewellyn, representing the minor, expressed relief at the guilty plea: “We are pleased to hear that the American Airlines flight attendant who preyed on at least five young girls has pled guilty for his depraved crimes. We commend the US Attorney’s Office for its work on bringing this felon to justice.”

Investigation Findings

Further investigations revealed that Thompson possessed recordings of four additional young girls using airplane bathrooms. The victims, aged between 7 and 14 years, were recorded without their knowledge during previous flights. In addition to the recordings, prosecutors found hundreds of artificially generated images of child sexual abuse in Thompson’s iCloud account.

American Airlines responded swiftly to the allegations, stating that Thompson was “immediately withheld from service” upon the discovery of the recordings and has not worked for the airline since.

Legal Consequences and Future Proceedings

The legal consequences for Thompson are severe. The charge of attempted sexual exploitation of children carries a prison sentence of 15 to 30 years. Additionally, possession of images depicting sexual abuse of a prepubescent minor can lead to up to 20 years in prison. Both charges include provisions for supervised release, potential fines up to $250,000, and restitution payments.

Thompson’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 17, 2025, and it remains to be seen how the court will address the gravity of his offenses.

This case serves as a reminder of the critical need for safety measures on flights. Parents are encouraged to be vigilant and to educate their children about safety in public spaces.
