Airbus has officially joined the competition to modernize LOT Polish Airlines’ regional fleet by offering its advanced A220 airliner in both the A220-100 and A220-300 versions. This strategic move comes as LOT Polish Airlines seeks to enhance its operations with new aircraft that promise efficiency and passenger comfort.
In response to a tender for 84 regional planes issued by Poland’s national carrier, Airbus has submitted its proposal. Benoit de Saint-Exupery, Airbus Vice President, confirmed to PAP Biznes that the A220 variants are being considered to replace LOT’s current fleet of regional jets. This modernization effort is expected to play a crucial role in improving LOT’s service quality and operational capabilities.
LOT Polish Airlines’ Fleet Modernization Plans
LOT Polish Airlines currently operates a diverse fleet of 50 regional jets, primarily consisting of Embraer models. The airline is weighing its options between the Airbus A220 and the Embraer E2 family as it plans to revamp its aircraft lineup. A decision is anticipated in the upcoming months, with the fleet replacement expected to commence in 2026 or 2027 and continue until 2030.
A220 Versus Embraer E2: Key Competitors
While this proposal represents Airbus’ potential entry into LOT’s regional fleet, it’s important to note that the A220 is already a popular choice among various European carriers, making it a strong contender against the Embraer E2 series.
- A220-100: Seats between 100 and 135 passengers, with a range of 6,390 kilometers.
- A220-300: Accommodates 120 to 160 passengers, reaching up to 6,297 kilometers.
In comparison, the Embraer E2 series includes:
- E175-E2: Seats up to 90 passengers.
- E190-E2: Accommodates 114 passengers.
- E195-E2: Seats up to 146 passengers, with a maximum range of 4,815 kilometers for the E195-E2 and 5,278 kilometers for the E190-E2.
A New Era for LOT Polish Airlines
This potential partnership would signify a significant shift for LOT Polish Airlines, which has historically favored Boeing, Embraer, and Bombardier aircraft. Currently, LOT’s regional fleet includes a mix of Embraer ERJ-195s, ERJ-190s, ERJ-175s, ERJ-170s, and E195-E2 jets, according to the Planespotters.com registry.
