IndiGo Expands International Reach with New European Routes Starting July 2025

GURUGRAM—IndiGo (6E), India’s leading low-cost airline, is set to significantly broaden its international horizon by launching services to key Western European destinations, including Amsterdam (AMS) and Manchester (MAN), beginning July 2025. This strategic move marks a transformative phase in IndiGo’s operations and aims to capitalize on the burgeoning demand for long-haul flights from India.

CEO Pieter Elbers envisions substantial opportunities in the long-haul market, which has historically been dominated by international airlines. With a growing fleet and strategic alliances, IndiGo is poised to redefine its presence in the competitive aviation sector.

IndiGo’s Strategic Long-Haul Expansion

IndiGo’s ambitious expansion plan into Western Europe signifies a crucial development for India’s aviation industry, as noted by CAPA. Currently operating over 400 aircraft with an additional 900 on order, the airline aims to capture a larger share of the Europe-India travel market, which remains underserved.

In a recent move to bolster its long-haul capabilities, IndiGo secured a wet lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways for up to six Boeing 787-9 aircraft. This arrangement will enhance its operations ahead of the anticipated delivery of 30 Airbus A350-900s starting in 2027. Presently, IndiGo operates only two widebody aircraft—Boeing 777-300ERs on a damp lease from Turkish Airlines, servicing routes from Delhi (DEL) and Mumbai (BOM) to Istanbul (IST).

IndiGo’s current European operations have primarily focused on Eastern Europe, with destinations like Baku (Azerbaijan), Tbilisi (Georgia), and Istanbul (Türkiye). The upcoming routes to Amsterdam and Manchester will commence with three weekly flights each, pending regulatory approval.

Market Potential and Competition

IndiGo’s entry into the Amsterdam market will encounter established competition from full-service airlines. Both Air India (AI) and KLM (KL) currently operate multiple daily flights connecting Amsterdam to Delhi and Mumbai. However, IndiGo’s codeshare partnership with KLM could enhance its competitive edge in this market.

The Manchester route offers a unique opportunity for IndiGo, as it will provide the only direct flight from India to the northern UK. This corridor serves a significant Indian diaspora, with around 500,000 individuals living within a two-hour radius of Manchester Airport. This route revives a service that has been absent since Jet Airways ceased operations in early 2019.

Growth in the Europe-India Aviation Market

The Europe-India aviation market is experiencing robust growth post-COVID-19, with seat capacity reaching record highs. In January 2025, capacity exceeded previous peaks by 10%, and annual capacity grew by 18% year-on-year in 2024, totaling 11.5 million seats. Projections for the first half of 2025 indicate a continued upward trend, with a 13% increase expected.

Despite this growth, the market remains underdeveloped compared to other major long-haul routes. Currently, 16 airlines operate between Europe and India, down from 18 in 2024, with Air India leading the market share at 30.2%. IndiGo ranks fourth with an 8.8% share, reflecting its increasing footprint in international travel.

IndiGo’s Competitive Strategy

IndiGo’s expansion strategy focuses on maintaining cost leadership in India’s competitive aviation market. CEO Pieter Elbers emphasizes the importance of cost efficiency while expanding the airline’s network. The extensive aircraft order book is seen as a vital asset for long-term growth.

The introduction of A321XLRs in 2024 will facilitate long-range narrow-body flights, while the A350s, scheduled for delivery in 2027, will strengthen IndiGo’s position in the full-service long-haul segment.
