COMAC to Build 75 C919 Jets to Compete with Airbus, Boeing
COMAC’s C919 Production Plans: A Game Changer for Aviation
SHANGHAI – The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the nation’s leading aircraft manufacturer, has unveiled its ambitious plans to significantly ramp up C919 production capacity. The new target aims to boost annual production from 50 jets to 75 by 2024, enhancing China’s position in the competitive global aviation market.
At a recent supplier conference in Xi’an (XIY), COMAC revealed its long-term strategy to achieve an annual output of 200 C919 aircraft by 2029, intensifying its competition against industry giants Boeing and Airbus.
COMAC C919 Production Capacity: A New Era
COMAC’s latest announcements highlight a strategic roadmap for increasing the C919 aircraft production. The company plans to escalate output significantly in the coming years:
- 2024: Increase to 75 aircraft
- 2025: Target set at 100 jets
- 2028: Aim for 150 aircraft annually
- 2029: Projected capacity of 200 jets
The C919, which commenced commercial service in May 2023, is China’s first domestically produced narrowbody jet. It has already attracted hundreds of orders from major airlines, including Air China (CA), China Eastern Airlines (MU), and China Southern Airlines (CZ). These airlines have reported a 40% rise in utilization rates during the Lunar New Year holiday compared to the previous year.
In support of this aggressive expansion, COMAC increased its annual procurement budget for the C919 program by 70%, bringing the total to approximately 34 billion yuan ($4.7 billion). President Shen Bo emphasized that the program has now entered a phase of "large-scale industrialization," marking a pivotal moment for China’s aviation self-sufficiency.
Growth Strategy and Future Development of COMAC
Founded in 2008, COMAC plays a crucial role in China’s aviation ambitions. The C919 is positioned to compete directly with Boeing and Airbus, who currently dominate the global single-aisle jet market. With substantial orders from China’s three major airlines, the C919 is gaining traction and market acceptance.
In addition to the C919, COMAC is also working on widebody aircraft such as the C929 and C939, which are designed to rival Boeing’s renowned 787 Dreamliner and 747. These aircraft will help reduce China’s dependence on Western manufacturers for long-haul flights.
While primarily focused on domestic markets, COMAC is generating international interest. In late 2023, Cathay Pacific (CX) CEO Ronald Lam led a delegation to assess COMAC’s progress, exploring a potential stretched variant of the C919 for regional operations and evaluating the C929 for mid-size widebody routes.
The Bottom Line: COMAC’s Impact on Global Aviation
COMAC’s rapid expansion in C919 production signifies a major shift in the global aviation landscape. With a strong order backlog, increasing aircraft deliveries, and ambitious expansion plans, the company is set to challenge Boeing and Airbus more aggressively in the coming years.
The success of the C919, along with future models like the C929, will be essential for establishing China as a formidable competitor in commercial aviation.
