ITA Airways Shifts to Lufthansa Terminals in Frankfurt, Munich
Lufthansa Group to Integrate ITA Airways Operations at Major Airports by Summer 2025
In a significant move for air travel, Germany’s Lufthansa Group has announced that starting in summer 2025, all ITA Airways flights at Frankfurt and Munich airports will be managed from Lufthansa terminals. This strategic integration aims to enhance passenger experience by consolidating operations "under one roof" across all Lufthansa Group hubs, marking a new era for travelers flying with ITA Airways.
Integration of ITA Airways into Lufthansa Group Operations
On March 30, 2025, Lufthansa revealed its plans to consolidate flight operations for ITA Airways and other member airlines. This initiative comes on the heels of an earlier announcement made in February 2025, detailing how the German airline would incorporate the newly acquired Italian carrier into its expansive global network.
- Comprehensive Handling Operations: The transition at both Frankfurt and Munich airports will encompass the entire ITA Airways handling operation, including:
- Check-in procedures
- Gate assignments
- Service desks
- Baggage claim processes
Changes at Frankfurt and Munich Airports
In Frankfurt, ITA Airways will shift from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1, aligning with Lufthansa Group operations. Passengers can expect significantly shorter transfer times, as they will have direct access to gate areas A and B. Additionally, Terminal 1 provides convenient access to the Deutsche Bahn long-distance train station, allowing travelers to connect easily with ICE high-speed train services.
Meanwhile, at Munich Airport, ITA Airways will transition from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, including its satellite terminal, which is co-managed by Lufthansa and Munich Airport. This terminal has consistently received five-star ratings from Skytrax, a testament to its superior services and facilities.
Advantages of the Integration for Passengers
Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group, emphasized that this integration offers ITA Airways passengers unparalleled access to the extensive benefits of the Lufthansa Group. Travelers will enjoy:
- A vast network of premium airlines
- Direct flights to numerous destinations in Italy
- Enhanced transfer experiences across airports within the group
This integration is part of a broader trend, as all Lufthansa Group airlines at other hubs—such as Brussels, Rome, Vienna, and Zurich—are now operating from the same terminals. Zurich Airport, for instance, has already streamlined the transfer process between SWISS and ITA Airways.
Codeshare Flights and Expanded Connections
In addition to terminal integration, ITA Airways and Lufthansa Group airlines are set to launch joint codeshare flights, allowing travelers to book a single itinerary across over 100 new codeshare connections within Europe. This expanded network will enable passengers to access lesser-known Italian airports, including Alghero (AHO), Lampedusa (LMP), Pantelleria (PNL), and Reggio Calabria (REG). Notably, travelers with a Lufthansa codeshare ticket will also be able to fly to Tripoli, Libya, as ITA Airways reopens this route from Rome’s Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO) in January 2025.
Access to Premium Lounges
Beginning March 30, 2025, ITA Airways passengers will gain access to approximately 130 lounges operated by the Lufthansa Group and its partners. Similarly, Lufthansa Group passengers will also have the opportunity to use ITA Airways lounges, further enhancing the travel experience.
