Go First Disassembles Grounded A320neos for Spare Parts
Unical Aviation Launches Groundbreaking A320neo Disassembly Program Amid Component Shortages
ARIZONA – Unical Aviation, a leading global provider of commercial aviation aftermarket solutions, has made headlines with its recent acquisition of a fleet of Airbus A320neo airframes. This strategic move marks the launch of the aviation industry’s first dedicated disassembly program for the A320neo family of aircraft. With ongoing component shortages impacting the aviation sector, Unical aims to address these challenges, with deliveries set to commence in April 2025.
The Importance of the A320neo Disassembly Program
Ecube, a subsidiary of Unical Group recognized as a global leader in aircraft storage and end-of-life solutions, will spearhead the disassembly operations at its facilities located in Coolidge, Arizona, Spain, and Wales. This innovative program is a significant milestone in Unical’s mission to enhance the availability of next-generation aftermarket materials essential for the expanding A320neo fleet.
David Dicken, EVP of Assets at Unical Aviation, stated, “As the first to launch a disassembly effort on A320neo aircraft, Unical is staying ahead of the curve to meet the evolving needs of our airline and MRO customers. These assets will soon be transformed into high-demand materials to support operators worldwide with cost-effective, timely aftermarket solutions.”
The Airbus A320neo family has become a cornerstone in commercial aviation, and this initiative is set to boost the availability of essential components while decreasing turnaround times for critical maintenance. This will ultimately translate into greater efficiency and cost savings for operators.
A320neo Acquisitions from GoFirst
Unical Aviation has secured a “double-digit quantity” of A320neo aircraft, with deliveries expected to occur over the next two years. Although the company has not disclosed the exact source of these airframes, a recent photograph suggests that some may be derived from the now-defunct Indian airline Go First (G8), which ceased operations in 2023 following bankruptcy protection.
Go First faced significant financial issues due to maintenance problems with its Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines, which resulted in the grounding of numerous A320neo aircraft. According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, the oldest A320neos in Go First’s fleet were delivered roughly a decade ago.
Expert Insights on the Disassembly Initiative
Mike Stengel, a partner at consultancy AeroDynamic Advisory, expressed surprise at Unical’s acquisition of A320neos for parts, given the high global demand for these aircraft. However, he acknowledged that such a strategy could be economically viable under specific circumstances, particularly if the aircraft lack engines and are expected to remain that way due to prolonged PW1100G shortages.
By pioneering this disassembly program, Unical Aviation emphasizes its commitment to providing innovative and sustainable solutions for the aviation industry. This initiative ensures that operators have timely access to essential components, especially as supply chain challenges continue to disrupt the sector.
