PLAY Airlines Predicts a Bright Summer 2025

PLAY Airlines Anticipates Strong Summer Season in 2025 Amid Strategic Changes

Icelandic low-cost carrier PLAY Airlines is gearing up for a robust summer season in 2025, as highlighted by its latest traffic figures for March 2025. With a new Maltese subsidiary operating under its own Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and a strategic pivot towards increased European flights, the airline is optimistic about its upcoming performance.

In March 2025, PLAY Airlines transported 111,531 passengers, a decrease from 142,918 passengers in the same month of 2024. This decline is primarily due to a 16.5% reduction in overall capacity, which resulted from leasing one of its aircraft to GlobalX Airlines based in Miami. Over the past year, PLAY has shifted its focus to expanding its European point-to-point network, reducing services to two North American destinations to better align with seasonal demand.

Traffic Performance and Load Factor

The airline’s load factor for March 2025 stood at 82.0%, down from 88.1% in March 2024. The company attributes this drop to its strategic shift towards seasonal leisure routes in Europe, especially in Southern Europe, where travel patterns are more affected by peak seasons.

  • Key Points:
    • 30.7% of passengers originated from Iceland.
    • 37.5% were traveling to Iceland.
    • 31.8% were connecting passengers.

“While leisure traffic generates higher yields, these markets primarily operate on a point-to-point basis without connecting traffic, leading to a lower load factor,” PLAY Airlines stated. Additionally, the timing of Easter in 2025—falling in April compared to March in 2024—contributed to lower passenger numbers.

Positive Outlook for Summer 2025

Looking ahead, PLAY Airlines remains optimistic about the summer of 2025, projecting an improved seat factor across all market segments. “Traffic to and from Iceland shows particularly strong forward bookings, with a higher volume of seats sold year-over-year, despite our reduced capacity,” the airline noted.

The airline’s newly established Maltese subsidiary, PLAY Europe, has recently received its AOC and is set to commence operations with three Airbus A321neos transferred from the parent company in Iceland. These aircraft will be leased to other carriers through ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, Insurance) wet-lease agreements.

CEO Einar Örn Ólafsson expressed his gratitude to the PLAY team for their efforts in securing the AOC, emphasizing its importance for building more stable financial operations. “This achievement allows us to operate a part of our fleet as a charter or ACMI business, enhancing our predictability and profitability,” he stated.

New Routes and Fleet Expansion

For the summer of 2025, PLAY Airlines is excited to announce the launch of its inaugural flights to Antalya, Turkey, marking a historic first for scheduled flights between Iceland and Turkey. Additionally, the airline will expand its services to Faro, Portugal, making it the fourth destination in the country alongside Lisbon, Porto, and Madeira.

PLAY Airlines will operate an all-Airbus fleet consisting of six A320neos and three A321neos, serving 39 destinations across 21 countries in Europe and North America.

Conclusion

As PLAY Airlines prepares for an exciting summer season, the focus remains on delivering exceptional service to its passengers. With strategic expansions and new routes on the horizon, the airline is well-positioned to navigate the competitive aviation landscape.
