Aer Lingus Evaluates Manchester Base Closure, Endangering 200 Jobs

Aer Lingus is currently evaluating its operating base at Manchester Airport (MAN), which may lead to the withdrawal of all long-haul services from this UK hub. This potential change could impact around 200 jobs, as the airline initiates formal discussions with its employees and trade unions regarding the situation.

The Manchester base was established in 2021 to meet the rising demand for transatlantic travel from North England. It currently facilitates long-haul routes to key destinations like New York (JFK), Barbados (BGI), and Orlando (MCO), in addition to short-haul flights to Dublin (DUB) and Belfast (BFS). If the base closes, flights to popular holiday locations, particularly Orlando, would likely be among the first to end.

In a recent message to employees, later covered by various media outlets, Aer Lingus admitted that the base has not performed as anticipated.

“Despite the ongoing efforts from the team, the operational margin from long-haul flights in Manchester significantly trails behind that of our services from Ireland. This discrepancy has led us to reconsider the long-term sustainability of the Manchester base,” the airline stated.

Aer Lingus has now commenced a collective consultation process, examining all options, which may include a complete cessation of operations at the base.

Should Aer Lingus move forward with closing the Manchester base, it is anticipated that the aircraft currently assigned to that location will be redirected to more lucrative routes, primarily through Dublin, where the airline’s long-haul network remains robust.

While no specific timeline has been announced for a final decision, it is expected to follow upcoming meetings with staff and the completion of consultations with trade unions.
