Philippine Airlines Names Richard Nuttall as First Foreign President
Philippine Airlines Welcomes New President Richard Nuttall: Aiming for Sustainable Growth
Philippine Airlines (PAL) has officially announced the appointment of Richard Nuttall as its new President, effective May 29, 2025. This strategic move comes as the airline seeks to enhance its management team and drive sustainable growth in an increasingly competitive aviation market.
Richard Nuttall, a British national, brings extensive experience in the airline industry, having held executive positions across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Notably, he served as Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines, where he successfully led a turnaround, resulting in operational profitability and a significant boost to Sri Lanka’s tourism sector.
Nuttall’s Vision for Philippine Airlines
In his new role, Nuttall will report directly to Dr. Lucio C. Tan, Chairman and CEO of PAL Holdings Inc., and Lucio C. Tan III, President and COO. His appointment aligns with PAL’s long-term strategy to strengthen its management team and expand internationally.
- Supporting Leadership: Carlos Luis Fernandez will also take on the role of Executive Vice President and COO, effective the same day as Nuttall’s commencement.
- Transition of Leadership: Nuttall succeeds Captain Stanley Ng, who has served as PAL President and COO since January 2022. Captain Ng will transition to a new role as Vice President of PAL Holdings Inc. and a member of the airline’s Board of Directors.
Dr. Lucio C. Tan expressed confidence in Nuttall’s capabilities, stating, “Philippine Airlines has always been committed to working with the best people across all levels, and I welcome Richard Nuttall as a worthy addition to an already formidable team. I am confident that he will create and develop sustainable growth for PAL.”
Lucio Tan III added, “Appointing Richard Nuttall is crucial for our strategy to build a robust management team and grow our business internationally. His leadership will bring a global perspective to our operations.”
PAL’s Positive Outlook for 2025
Philippine Airlines is optimistic about its growth trajectory heading into 2025. The airline reported a net income of PHP 10.01 billion (approximately $176.7 million) in 2024, building on record earnings of PHP 21 billion (around $371.1 million) in 2023.
- Sustaining Momentum: Nuttall is expected to maintain this momentum, with Ng expressing readiness to embrace his new responsibilities while supporting Nuttall’s leadership.
As Philippine Airlines gears up for a new chapter under Richard Nuttall, stakeholders are eager to see how his international experience will influence the airline’s operations and growth strategy.
