Asia’s Largest Airport Launch Delayed to July 2025

Noida International Airport Delays: New Launch Timeline Pushed Back to July 2025

The Noida International Airport (DXN) project has hit yet another roadblock, as officials announce that the airport will not meet its latest launch deadline of May 15. This delay is primarily due to ongoing construction issues, pushing the expected start of domestic operations to a new date—likely July 2025.

Originally set to open on September 29, 2024, the airport’s launch has already faced multiple rescheduling, with previous dates set for April 17, 2025, and May 15 now being abandoned. These repeated setbacks have resulted in financial penalties for the developers, further complicating the project’s timeline.

Noida Airport Launch Delayed: Financial Penalties Imposed

The Uttar Pradesh government has enforced a daily fine of ₹10 lakh on Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), the project’s concessionaire, since January 1 for failing to meet crucial deadlines. This financial pressure underscores the urgency for the airport’s completion, as stakeholders scramble to rectify the situation.

Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh recently inspected the construction site and has scheduled a stakeholder meeting to establish new timelines. A comprehensive status report is expected within the next 15 days.

Construction and Regulatory Challenges Facing Noida Airport

As of mid-March, the construction of Noida International Airport is only 80% complete. While the runway and airside infrastructure are nearing 90% completion, the terminal building is significantly behind schedule. Key construction challenges include:

  • Terminal Building: Major roofing and interior work still ongoing.
  • Water and Sewage Facilities: Only 40% complete.
  • CNS/ATM Systems: Commissioning has been delayed until April 30, impacting operational readiness.

In addition to construction delays, the airport faces regulatory hurdles. The aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is still pending. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has indicated that only limited Air Traffic Control capabilities can be demonstrated for DGCA inspection after the new deadline.

Exploring Operational Alternatives for Noida Airport

During a recent review meeting, DGCA officials proposed three potential operational strategies:

  1. Initiating cargo-only operations by May 15.
  2. Partially opening for passenger services using completed sections of the terminal.
  3. Postponing operations until Phase 1 is fully completed.

The Noida International Airport project is now more than a year behind its initial schedule. This delay highlights the intricate challenges associated with developing large-scale infrastructure projects in the region.
