KLM Cancels Long-Haul Flights Due to Boeing 787 Grounding
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Cancels International Flights Due to Boeing 787 Maintenance Issues
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has made headlines this weekend as it cancels five international flights due to maintenance issues with seven of its Boeing 787 aircraft. This decision has left over 650 passengers stranded at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) during the busy travel season. The airline’s commitment to safety and proper maintenance procedures is at the forefront of this situation, leading to significant delays for travelers.
On May 3, 2025, KLM announced the cancellation of three long-haul flights to popular destinations: Mexico City (MEX), Chicago O’Hare (ORD), and Portland (PDX). While passengers heading to the United States were eventually able to depart the same day, they faced delays ranging from three to five hours. Unfortunately, the flight to Mexico, carrying 250 travelers, was delayed for a full day, causing considerable inconvenience.
Additional Cancellations Due to Urgent Maintenance
The following day, May 4, 2025, KLM canceled two more international flights to Shanghai and Los Angeles as part of urgent maintenance for the Boeing 787 fleet. The Dutch press agency Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau (ANP) reported that approximately 200 passengers from each of these flights have been successfully rebooked on alternative services.
Reasons Behind the Cancellations
These cancellations stem from the discovery of improper maintenance procedures involving parts of the affected Boeing 787 aircraft. A KLM spokesperson assured the public that “although there are no safety risks, the seven aircraft are being maintained at an accelerated pace and will remain on the ground in the meantime.” The airline is committed to adhering to the correct maintenance guidelines to ensure the safety and comfort of its passengers.
Looking Ahead
KLM is actively working to resolve these maintenance issues and restore its flight schedule. Passengers are encouraged to check their flight status and stay informed about any further changes.
