China Airlines Expands Fleet with New Order of Boeing 777X Aircraft

In a strategic move to enhance its fleet, Taiwan-based China Airlines has officially placed a firm order for 10 Boeing 777-9s and four 777-8 freighters, marking its entry into the growing family of Boeing 777X customers. This significant order, confirmed by Boeing on May 8, 2025, was initially reported in March 2025 as unidentified on the company’s orders and deliveries platform.

The agreement not only includes the initial order but also provides China Airlines with the option to purchase an additional five 777-9s and four 777-8 freighters, further solidifying its commitment to modernizing its fleet.

Strategic Fleet Expansion Plans

In December 2024, China Airlines had already announced plans to order 10 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft alongside its Boeing 777-9 passenger aircraft and 777-8 freighters. The A350-1000s will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, while the 777-9s will utilize General Electric GE9X engines.

Kao Shing-Hwang, Chairman of China Airlines, expressed enthusiasm about integrating the Boeing 777X family into their operations. "As a long-time operator of the 777-300ER and 777 Freighter, we are excited to welcome Boeing’s newest 777X family into our world-class fleet," he stated. The advanced technology of the 777-9 promises to enhance the passenger experience, while the 777-8 Freighter’s fuel efficiency will bolster the airline’s air cargo capabilities.

Commitment to Sustainability

This investment is a crucial step toward China Airlines’ long-term sustainability goals. The airline anticipates that the new aircraft will help pave the way for a greener future in aviation. Although China Airlines has projected the delivery of its new widebody fleet to begin in 2029, Boeing did not confirm those details in its announcement.

Brad McMullen, Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, welcomed China Airlines into the 777X customer family, noting the nearly 60-year partnership between the two companies. He expressed excitement about delivering the new 777Xs, which will feature the airline’s distinctive plum blossom livery.

Enhanced Capacity and Configuration

The Boeing 777-9 is designed to accommodate 426 passengers in a typical two-class configuration and can travel distances of up to 7,295 nautical miles (about 13,510 km). This capability allows China Airlines to increase its operational capacity and position itself for future growth.

Dan Schull, Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales for Northeast Asia, emphasized that the operation of the 777-9 and 777-8 Freighter will enable China Airlines to expand its service offerings significantly. Along with the new 777X jets, the airline has also placed orders for 787 Dreamliners, further enhancing its fleet diversity.

China Airlines’ forthcoming widebody aircraft will be configured to offer three classes: Premium Business, Premium Economy, and Economy. As of now, the airline’s active fleet consists of 80 aircraft, including 10 Boeing 777-300ERs, 15 Airbus A330-300s, and 15 A350-900s, along with nine Boeing 777-200 freighters.
