Vietnam Airlines Restarts Hanoi-Moscow Flights After 3 Years

Vietnam Airlines Resumes Direct Flights to Russia: A Gateway for Travelers

Vietnam Airlines has officially resumed direct flights between Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) and Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO), marking a significant milestone in international travel. This much-anticipated return of nonstop flights began on May 8, 2025, three years after the route was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With this development, Vietnam Airlines aims to strengthen connections between Vietnam and Russia, enhancing tourism and cultural exchanges.

The inaugural flight, designated VN 63, utilized the airline’s state-of-the-art Boeing B787-9 Dreamliner and experienced a remarkable 100% passenger capacity. Currently, the flight operates twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with plans to increase to three flights per week by July 2026.

Importance of the Hanoi-Moscow Route

According to local media outlet VNExpress, Russia is a crucial market for Vietnamese tourism. In 2024, passenger traffic between Vietnam and Russia surpassed 220,000, representing a 2.3-fold increase from the previous year. This resurgence in travel signals a growing interest in exploring the cultural and historical ties between the two nations.

Collaborative Efforts to Enhance Tourism

Just two days after the resumption of flights, Vietnam Airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with VTB Bank, a state-owned financial institution in Russia. This partnership aims to foster cultural exchanges, boost tourism support, and create further cooperation opportunities.

Expanding International Routes

The resumption of the Hanoi-Moscow route is part of a broader strategy by Vietnam Airlines to enhance its international presence. In addition to Moscow, the airline is also reopening several other international routes this May 2025:

  • Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) – Busan’s Gimhae International Airport (PUS) starting May 31, 2025
  • Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) – Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) starting May 1, 2025
  • Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) – Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) starting May 8, 2025
