DOT Grants Approval for United Airlines and JetBlue’s Blue Sky Alliance
United Airlines and JetBlue have received approval from the Department of Transportation (DOT) to move ahead with their Blue Sky partnership.
On July 29, 2025, the airlines announced that a review by the Trump Administration had been finalized.
Both United and JetBlue expressed gratitude towards Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Assistant Secretary Daniel Edwards, and their team for their efforts during the review process.
The airlines stated they will provide additional updates as the implementation of the Blue Sky collaboration progresses.
Concerns About the Partnership
Earlier, Spirit Airlines raised objections regarding the partnership when it was first proposed in May 2025.
Under the Blue Sky initiative, United and JetBlue are merging their loyalty programs, allowing United’s MileagePlus members to earn and redeem miles on most JetBlue flights.
In return, JetBlue’s TrueBlue customers will have the opportunity to earn and use points for travel on United’s broad domestic and international network.
Enhanced Customer Access
Thanks to an interline agreement, both airlines will feature tickets for each other’s routes on their websites and apps, along with shared loyalty program advantages like priority boarding.
From an operational standpoint, the carriers will exchange slots at their respective hub airports to optimize their flight offerings. JetBlue will provide slots for up to seven round-trip flights for United at New York-JFK International Airport (JFK).
In turn, United Airlines will offer eight slots at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) for JetBlue’s use.
What do you think about this new partnership? Are you excited about the enhanced travel options it may bring?
