Air France-KLM Withdraws Acquisition Offer for Air Europa Due to Shareholder Issues
Air France-KLM has officially concluded discussions regarding a potential investment in Air Europa, the Spanish airline owned by Globalia. CEO Benjamin Smith announced this decision while presenting the group’s half-year results on July 31, 2025.
Smith stated, “We’ve ended the discussions,” when questioned about the negotiations with the Hidalgo family, who control 80% of Air Europa through Globalia. The airline group opted out of pursuing the purchase due to a lack of agreement, according to a subsequent statement.
Details of the Negotiations
Throughout the negotiation period, Air France-KLM did not publicly announce a formal offer. Nonetheless, reports indicated that the group had proposed €300 million for a 51% stake in Air Europa. Conversely, the Hidalgo family had initially valued a 20% stake at €240 million, later adjusting the valuation to €960 million for a 25% share.
Air France-KLM had engaged in talks with Globalia since November 2024, marking its third unsuccessful attempt to acquire part of Air Europa. The first attempt, in 2019, was derailed due to interest from Iberia, while a second effort in 2021 involved collaboration with Delta Air Lines, the US partner of Air France-KLM.
Competitive Offers
During this timeframe, International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of Iberia, also pursued acquisitions of Air Europa. Initial bids from IAG were as high as €1 billion, later reduced to €500 million, but these offers faced regulatory hurdles imposed by the European Commission.
Following Air France-KLM’s withdrawal from the discussions, other airlines, including Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines, have expressed interest in acquiring a stake in Air Europa, which remains partially owned by IAG.
