Korean Air Introduces Premium Economy Class on Boeing 777-300ER

SEOUL- Korean Air (KE) is set to unveil a new Premium Class cabin on its retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, with inaugural flights commencing from Seoul Incheon (ICN) in mid-September targeting short- and mid-haul international destinations.

The airline has committed an impressive KRW 300 billion to refurbish a total of 11 aircraft in its 777-300ER fleet. This extensive retrofit aims to align cabin designs and onboard features with the latest aircraft models while introducing a Premium Class option situated between Prestige (business) and Economy classes.

Korean Air 777 Premium Economy

The new Premium Class serves as a middle ground between Economy and Prestige Class. It features a 2-4-2 seating layout with 40 seats, each offering approximately 50% more personal space compared to standard Economy seats.

Seat pitch ranges from 39 to 41 inches (about 1 meter), with seats measuring 19.5 inches in width and capable of reclining up to 130 degrees. Additional amenities include leg and footrests, ergonomic headrests, and privacy-enhancing design elements.

Each seat is equipped with a 15.6-inch 4K resolution in-flight entertainment system—larger than those available in Prestige Class. Passengers will have access to the airline’s extensive entertainment library and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout their journey.

Service has also seen significant upgrades. Premium Class passengers will enjoy gourmet meal options served on Armani/Casa tableware, which includes an appetizer, main course, and dessert curated from the Prestige Class menu. Beverage selections mirror those found in business class, featuring premium wine, coffee, and tea.

Moreover, ground services for Premium Class travelers have been enhanced. They will enjoy exclusive access to Morning Calm check-in counters, priority baggage handling, and Sky Priority boarding for eligible routes.

Fleet Retrofit and Cabin Updates

The introduction of Premium Class is part of a larger initiative to overhaul the cabin aesthetic across Korean Air’s Boeing 777-300ER fleet.

The retrofit project began back in 2018 but encountered delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that it’s back on course, the upgraded interiors mirror the design features of the airline’s latest aircraft deliveries.

The upgraded fleet will include:

  • Prestige Suites 2.0 in a 1-2-1 configuration providing direct aisle access for business class patrons.
  • New Economy Class featuring a 3-4-3 layout with enhanced seating and amenities.
  • Enhanced Wi-Fi and upgraded entertainment options across all classes.

This modernization effort reflects Korean Air’s commitment to improving the long-haul travel experience while gradually rolling out Premium Class on additional routes.

Pricing and Route Plans

Around 110% of standard Economy fares will typically apply for Premium Class, though specific prices may vary by route and travel dates.

Initially, the focus will be on regional routes, with plans to extend to long-haul flights as the retrofit program progresses.

This approach aims to provide passengers with greater choices, enhanced comfort, and a cohesive onboard experience across Korean Air’s fleet. Are you excited to experience this new cabin class on your next journey?
