Air India Unveils $400M Upgrade Initiative for B787-8 Dreamliner Fleet

Air India has embarked on a significant retrofit initiative for its widebody fleet as part of a $400 million modernization strategy.

In July 2025, the airline’s Boeing 787-8 aircraft, identified as VT-ANT, was sent to Boeing’s facility in California to kick off the initial phase of upgrades. A second 787-8 is slated for the same treatment in October. According to a statement from Air India on August 10, both planes are anticipated to return to passenger operations by December.

The modernization project encompasses a comprehensive cabin overhaul that includes new seating for all classes, cutting-edge in-flight entertainment systems, refreshed carpeting, curtains, upholstery, lavatories, and galleys. Beyond enhancing passenger comfort, Air India is rolling out a Reliability Enhancement Program aimed at upgrading avionics and other crucial components across the entire B787-8 fleet, in line with Boeing’s service bulletins. This initiative seeks to minimize operational interruptions.

The retrofit program for Air India’s B787-8s will introduce entirely new interiors, featuring a three-class configuration comprising Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class. These upgrades are in line with the airline’s commitment to enhancing product and customer experience standards.

This extensive retrofit effort will encompass all 26 B787-8 aircraft, with seven of them also receiving heavy scheduled maintenance checks at the Victorville facility.

Additionally, Air India plans to start retrofitting 13 of its older Boeing 777-300ER aircraft beginning in early 2027. However, the airline has cautioned that supply chain delays may push the expected completion date to October 2028.

In parallel, the airline is also progressing with the retrofit program for its 27 A320neo aircraft, which commenced in September 2024 and is set for completion by September 2025. So far, 17 of these aircraft have already undergone retrofitting, with the 15th expected to return to service on August 11, 2025.
