Delta Introduces Speedy Baggage Transfers for Seoul-Atlanta Routes

ATLANTA– Delta Air Lines (DL) has broadened its efficient baggage transfer program for international passengers, now encompassing flights from Seoul’s Incheon International Airport (ICN) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL).

Travelers on Delta and Korean Air (KE) services from Seoul to Atlanta will no longer have to retrieve and recheck their luggage before catching domestic flights. This change is designed to save around 25 minutes during layovers. While passengers still need to clear security, their checked bags will seamlessly transfer to their next flight.

Delta Enhances Baggage Transfer for ICN-ATL Passengers

Previously, U.S.-bound travelers dealt with multiple steps upon arrival: passing through passport control, collecting checked baggage, rechecking it, and then going through security again before reaching their next gate.

The new protocol for passengers arriving from Seoul to Atlanta eliminates the baggage recheck. Bags are transferred automatically to the connecting flight, akin to domestic connections. This innovation is made possible through a collaboration between South Korean airport security and the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

At ICN, security personnel forward X-ray images of passengers’ bags to TSA agents while the plane is in transit to the U.S. TSA reviews these images en route, negating the need for a second baggage screening upon arrival.

Expanding One-Stop Security Network

Delta’s one-stop baggage transfer initiative is already in effect for passengers traveling to Atlanta from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and those connecting through Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) on American Airlines after flights from LHR.

• London Heathrow (LHR) → Atlanta (ATL) or Dallas Fort Worth (DFW): No baggage or security recheck required.

• Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD) → Los Angeles (LAX) on American Airlines: Baggage transfers automatically, though a security check is still required.
• Atlanta (ATL) or Dallas (DFW) → London Heathrow (LHR): No security recheck upon arriving at LHR.

Enhanced Goals for TSA and Airlines

U.S. Customs and Border Protection along with the TSA are advocating for this program as a means to improve efficiency and safety. The long-term objective is to extend the one-stop service model to additional countries with compatible security measures.

Delta has indicated that it is actively working towards removing the security recheck requirement for passengers traveling from Seoul to Atlanta.
