Wizz Air Launches New Base in Bratislava, Slovakia: What to Expect
The announcement made on August 13, 2024, revealed that Wizz Air is inaugurating a new base in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. This pan-European ultra-low-cost airline is set to introduce 12 new routes from Bratislava Airport (BTS).
These new connections will include destinations such as Athens (ATH), Alicante (ALC), Barcelona (BCN), Malaga (AGP), Basel EuroAirport (BSL), Oslo (OSL), Lamezia Terme (SUF), Naples (NAP), and Palermo (PMO) in Italy, as well as Niš (INI) in Serbia, along with Plovdiv (PDV) and Varna (VAR) in Bulgaria.
The launch of these routes will take place between November 14 and December 16, 2025. Additionally, another route to Bucharest Otopeni (OTP) was announced earlier and will commence on October 28, 2025.
These 13 routes will expand upon the existing two routes serviced by Wizz Air in Bratislava, which currently include London-Luton (LTN) and Skopje (SKP) in Northern Macedonia.
This new base signifies a substantial growth in capacity for Bratislava Airport, with two Airbus A321neo aircraft being stationed there. The establishment of this base will contribute nearly one million additional seats per year. In 2025, the airport is expected to accommodate almost two million passengers.
Bratislava has traditionally offered limited air services, partly due to its proximity to the larger, more connected Vienna International Airport (VIE), located about 50 km away across the border in Austria. Vienna also hosts a Wizz Air base that connects to numerous destinations.
As of August 2025, Ryanair remains the dominant operator at Bratislava Airport. The Irish low-cost airline operates year-round flights to about 16 destinations from the Slovakian capital, with little overlap with Wizz Air’s newly announced routes. Other airlines at the airport mainly consist of charter and seasonal operators focusing on leisure travel.
In the summer of 2025, Wizz Air outlined plans to increase capacity across several European markets, including Romania and the United Kingdom. This expansion follows a strategic pivot, where the airline decided to withdraw from its Abu Dhabi venture, reallocating resources to strengthen its presence in Europe.
