Korean Air Sets Record with 103-Aircraft Deal, Boeing’s Biggest in Asia
Korean Air has unveiled plans to acquire 103 aircraft from Boeing, marking a monumental $50 billion investment. This represents the largest order in the airline’s history.
A formal signing ceremony took place in Washington on August 25, 2025. This announcement followed a meeting between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and US President Donald Trump at the White House, where discussions centered on the 15% tariff the US imposed on South Korean imports in July 2025.
In a statement from the International Trade Administration (ITA) on the same day, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade William Kimmitt emphasized, “As one of America’s largest trading partners, the Republic of Korea recognizes the strength of US innovation and manufacturing, and this deal further enhances our economic relationship.”
The aircraft order consists of 20 Boeing 777-9s, 25 Boeing 787-10s, 50 Boeing 737-10s, and eight Boeing 777-8F freighters. This transaction denotes Boeing’s largest widebody order ever from an Asian carrier, with deliveries expected to be staggered until the end of 2030.
“We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Korean Air through this historic agreement,” remarked Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “As Korean Air evolves into a larger, unified carrier, we are dedicated to supporting its growth with one of the world’s most efficient fleets.”
Korean Air described this aircraft acquisition as a “proactive measure” aimed at fostering growth in the wake of its ongoing integration with Asiana Airlines.
Apart from the new aircraft, the airline plans to purchase 11 spare engines from GE Aerospace and eight from CFM International. Additionally, Korean Air will benefit from a 20-year engine maintenance service from GE Aerospace for 28 aircraft.
The overall investment in this deal is estimated to be around $50 billion (KRW 70 trillion), including $36.2 billion (KRW 50 trillion) for the aircraft, $690 million (KRW 1 trillion) for 19 spare engines, and $13 billion (KRW 18.2 trillion) for the extensive maintenance service contract.
Once the deal is finalized, it will represent Korean Air’s first order for the 777-8F and is projected to create approximately 135,000 jobs across the United States.
Currently, Korean Air operates a fleet of 108 Boeing aircraft, which includes models such as the 737, 747, 777, and 787. With 72 Boeing jets on order, the airline’s total order book will swell to 175 aircraft upon completion of this transaction.
In 2025 alone, Korean Air has initiated orders for over 150 Boeing aircraft, inclusive of 20 777-9s and 20 787-10s, with options for an additional 10 787 Dreamliners in the future, following its prior order placed in March 2025.
