Virgin Australia Introduces Its Inaugural Embraer E190-E2 Aircraft
Embraer’s E190-E2 has officially entered the fleet of Virgin Australia, marking a significant moment for the airline. The handover ceremony took place at the production facility located in São José dos Campos, Brazil.
As part of an agreement with US-based lessor Azorra, Virgin Australia has ordered a total of eight E190-E2 aircraft. This delivery is particularly noteworthy, as it represents the first time a major airline group in Australia will operate this model.
Embraer confirmed on September 2, 2025, that this new E190-E2 has been successfully delivered. The airline will add three more aircraft from Azorra’s firm orderbook later this year and extending into 2026.
Nick Rohrlach, Group Executive of Virgin Australia Regional Airlines, expressed excitement about the arrival of the E190-E2 jets. “Replacing our Fokker 100s with these next-generation jets allows us to better connect resources, industry clients, and regional communities across Western Australia, with improved reliability, significantly reduced noise, and lower emissions,” he stated.
He further noted that the aircraft is designed to handle the challenging climates and environments in which they operate, all while offering customers a spacious and comfortable in-flight experience.
The new E190-E2, which accommodates 100 seats, promises to improve fuel efficiency significantly, with savings of up to 30% compared to the outgoing Fokker 100 fleet. This transition is a key component of Virgin Australia Regional Airlines’ broader fleet modernization initiatives.
John Evans, the CEO and founder of Azorra, highlighted the significance of this deal, stating, “Welcoming Virgin Australia as a new customer marks a proud milestone for our team. The E190-E2 offers outstanding efficiency and reduced fuel burn, making it the ideal aircraft for Virgin Australia’s fleet modernization program.”
The first E190-E2, named ‘Coral Bay,’ is equipped with Pratt & Whitney GTF engines and is expected to enter service by October 2025.
