Pakistan Undergoes FAA Review to Reestablish US Flight Routes
A team from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has arrived in Pakistan to conduct an important audit of the country’s aviation system. This visit is seen as a significant step toward potentially restoring direct flights between Pakistan and the United States.
The inspection began on September 6, 2025, marking the first such assessment in years. The FHA will focus on critical aspects, including the regulatory compliance of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), pilot licensing processes, and overall safety measures within the aviation sector.
This FAA evaluation, scheduled to continue through September 12, 2025, involves a detailed review of various departments within Pakistan’s CAA. Auditors will assess whether the country has met the necessary criteria to sustain international aviation safety standards in the long run.
Although the audit results won’t immediately reinstate flight permissions, a favorable outcome could be a strong signal that direct services between the two nations may return soon.
The suspension of direct flights between Pakistan and the US occurred in 2020 following allegations related to irregularities in pilot licensing. This controversy led to the grounding of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights and resulted in bans in Europe and the UK, along with a downgrade of Pakistan’s aviation safety rating.
In response, Pakistan’s CAA has implemented numerous reforms aimed at rebuilding trust internationally. These reforms include stricter pilot examination protocols, improved flight safety monitoring systems, and efforts to align procedures with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
Should PIA regain access to the United States, particularly to major airports such as New York (JFK), Washington D.C. (IAD), and Chicago (ORD), it would reopen a critical long-haul market. A successful audit would not only bolster Pakistan’s credibility with global aviation regulators but also pave the way to restore international operations that have faced restrictions in recent times.
What are your thoughts on the potential restoration of direct flights between Pakistan and the United States?
