Air India Calls Off Plans for Dallas to New Delhi Flight Route

DALLAS- Air India (AI) has decided to cancel its initially planned nonstop flight route from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi. This cancellation reflects updates to the airline’s 2025 schedule, negating the previously approved service from late 2024.

The cancellation arises as Air India is currently engaged in a major aircraft retrofit program, which has grounded several long-haul aircraft for necessary upgrades. Local leaders in North Texas and the Indian community were looking forward to enhanced connectivity through this new route.

Air India Cancels Dallas to Delhi Flight

This route was initially approved by India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation in October 2024, with operations scheduled to commence by December 1 of that year. However, analysts expected the launch would be pushed to 2025 due to various preparation requirements.

DFW had appeared on Air India’s approved flight schedule, leading to hopes of establishing direct links between the American Southwest and India.

According to the Dallas Business Journal, the airline quietly removed Dallas from its list of served airports on its updated 2025 timetable.

Air India has yet to issue an official response or statement regarding this modification. The now-canceled flight would have connected a major Texas hub to Delhi, serving both business travelers and a growing Indian expatriate community.

This change is attributed to Air India’s ongoing retrofit of its long-haul fleet, which has temporarily grounded several wide-body airplanes.

The retrofit aims to modernize interiors and systems of aircraft like the Boeing 777s and 787s, aligning with the airline’s rebranding effort under Tata Group ownership.

Analysts suggest that the lack of the Dallas route is linked to these operational disruptions, as the airline is focusing on maintaining its existing routes during this transitional phase.

The network focuses on key East Coast and West Coast gateways, with Chicago serving as a central hub for the Midwest. While Air India has a broad global reach of over 100 destinations, its North American operations focus on high-demand markets.

The previously planned Dallas route would have enhanced access to the southwestern United States; however, current priorities constrain growth.

Support for the proposed Delhi connection was strong, given the large Indian population residing in North Texas—over 300,000 individuals, particularly in tech and business sectors.

A direct flight would have streamlined travel time and costs, encouraging family visits and enhancing trade connections between Texas and India.

Local officials viewed this connection as a potential catalyst for economic growth, predicting a substantial rise in annual passenger counts.
