Norwegian Airlines Establishes Base in Billund, Denmark and Unveils 10 New Routes
Norwegian Air Shuttle officially declared on October 1, 2025, that it is set to reopen its base in Billund (BLL), situated in the south-central region of Jutland, Denmark. This move marks an exciting development for the low-cost airline.
The carrier is planning to introduce ten new routes from Billund, targeting primarily southern European destinations. Some of the notable nonstop services will connect Billund to cities like Barcelona (BCN), Milan-Bergamo (BGY), Chania (CHQ) in Crete, Edinburgh (EDI), Rome-Fiumicino (FCO), Gran Canaria (GPA), Malta (MLA), Naples (NAP), Nice (NCE), and Porto (POR).
Launch Timeline and Seasonal Operations
These new routes are expected to commence in the summer of 2026. Notably, flights to Chania, Naples, Nice, Porto, and Malta will initially be available only during the summer months.
In recent developments, Norwegian’s competitor Ryanair, previously the largest operator at Billund, has announced the closure of its base at the airport. This decision, made in January 2025, involves redeploying two Boeing 737 aircraft. Ryanair cited the introduction of a DKK 50 (€6.7 / $7.8) charge for departing passengers by the Danish government as a key factor in its decision, along with a lack of a long-term agreement with the airport operator.
Previous Attempts and Future Plans
This isn’t Norwegian’s first attempt to establish a robust presence at Billund. The airline had previously set up a base there in 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent financial struggles led to a reduction in operations, ultimately resulting in the winding down of those services.
Despite this, Norwegian has maintained some operations from Billund, offering flights to destinations such as Málaga (AGP), Alicante (ALC), Oslo (OSL), London-Gatwick (LGW), and Palma de Mallorca (PMI) during the summer season.
Positive Growth Indicators
The news of the Billund expansion comes on the heels of other announcements indicating the airline’s financial rebound and ambition for growth. On September 26, 2025, Norwegian confirmed its decision to acquire 30 additional Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, aiming to further expand its operations.
