IndiGo Challenges Allegations of Inadequate Simulators for Cat C Airports
IndiGo, India’s largest airline, is challenging a directive from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) regarding its pilot training practices. The regulatory body claims that the airline did not utilize certified simulators for training its pilots.
On October 8, 2025, IndiGo submitted a notice to the National Stock Exchange of India, revealing that it had been penalized Rs 20 lakh ($24,100) for this violation. The issue mainly pertains to the alleged failure to employ qualified simulators for pilot training at Category C Aerodromes.
Category C Aerodromes present unique challenges due to their layout, requiring only experienced pilots who have undergone specific simulator training to operate there. In its filing, IndiGo mentioned that it is currently appealing the order with the relevant appellate authority.
The airline emphasized that this situation has no significant impact on its finances, operations, or other activities. IndiGo also expressed regret for not disclosing the DGCA order sooner, noting that the penalty was received on September 28, 2025.
“The delay in communication was unintentional,” stated IndiGo, explaining that internal communication concerning the order contributed to the holdup. According to reports, IndiGo had received a show-cause notice from the DGCA in August 2025 regarding alleged lapses in simulator training for approximately 1,700 pilots.
How do you think such challenges will affect the airline industry moving forward?
