EVA Air Flight Attendant Passes Away Mid-Flight Following Leave Denial
TAIPEI- A heartbreaking incident involving EVA Air, one of Taiwan’s major international airlines, has sparked widespread public outrage. A flight attendant fell critically ill during a flight and subsequently died, allegedly after being denied medical assistance and instructed to keep working.
The tragic event occurred on flight BR95, traveling from Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) to Taipei Taoyuan International Airport (TPE). Both the airline and Taiwan’s Ministry of Labor have launched investigations to determine if management negligence and systemic policy failures contributed to this tragedy.

EVA Air Flight Attendant Passes Away
This incident has drawn harsh criticism toward EVA Air after the death of a young flight attendant who became ill during a long-haul flight from Milan to Taipei on September 25. Reports indicate she had previously displayed signs of illness on the outbound leg, and her condition deteriorated significantly on the return journey.
Despite her worsening health, claims suggest the cabin manager instructed her to work throughout the entire 13-hour flight and refused to contact Medlink, the airline’s medical advisory service. Eyewitnesses reported that the manager denied requests to arrange for medical assistance upon landing, forcing the sick crew member to leave the airport alone, visibly unwell.
After being taken to the hospital later, her condition had worsened to the point where nothing could be done to save her. EVA Air expressed its deep sorrow over the tragic loss and announced an internal investigation. However, a fellow crew member described this event as a predictable outcome of a systemic disregard for crew welfare.

Union Advocacy for Sick Leave Policies
Taiwan’s Ministry of Labor is also looking into whether EVA Air exhibited any negligence during this incident. If found culpable, the airline may face heavy penalties for breaching labor protection laws.
The Taoyuan Flight Attendant Union, representing EVA Air staff, criticized the airline’s strict sick leave policies, claiming these practices inadvertently coerce employees into working while unwell. While EVA Air asserts that sick employees are discouraged from working, the union argues that the current leave structure is punitive, causing significant disruptions to flight schedules, affecting annual reviews, and reducing bonus opportunities.
The union has called for a cultural shift toward more empathy regarding crew health and urged management to replace punitive measures with supportive practices for attendance management. Flight attendants are particularly susceptible to illness due to irregular hours and prolonged exposure to high-altitude conditions that may compromise their health.

Wider Industry Challenges
This situation has sparked a renewed global discussion on the handling of crew health in the airline industry. Flight attendants need to maintain peak physical and mental fitness to respond effectively to emergencies, yet many report facing penalties for illnesses that prevent them from performing their duties.
Aviation experts urge airlines to update their crew welfare policies, advocating for transparent sick leave regulations, improved access to medical guidance during flights, and increased flexibility in recovery periods for crew members.
Observers believe this tragic event with EVA Air could serve as a crucial reminder for airlines worldwide to reevaluate how they reconcile operational pressures with the health and well-being of their employees.
