Finnair Suspends 40 Flights Due to Airbus A321 Grounding Issues

HELSINKI- On the evening of October 13, 2025, numerous passengers found themselves stranded after Finnair (AY) grounded several aircraft due to concerns over the integrity of a special fire-retardant coating on seat covers.

The airline suspended operations for eight Airbus A321s at Helsinki Airport (HEL) after it was discovered that water-based cleaning could potentially damage the protective layer. This prompted immediate safety inspections and led to flight cancellations.

Finnair Grounds Eight A321s

Finnair’s efforts to maintain clean cabin interiors hit a snag when the seat manufacturer cautioned that water application could diminish fire protection. By that time, cleaning crews had already washed the seats on eight aircraft, representing more than a quarter of the airline’s short and medium-haul fleet.

The airline affirmed that passenger safety is its highest priority and insisted on adhering to the guidelines set by manufacturers and authorities.

However, the seat manufacturer later indicated that the impact of water cleaning on the fire-retardant materials hadn’t been fully tested or established. This lack of clarity left Finnair with no alternative but to ground the impacted aircraft until the coatings’ integrity is verified.

In light of these events, Finnair temporarily suspended operations for affected aircraft with registrations OH-LZM, OH-LZN, OH-LZO, OH-LZP, OH-LZR, OH-LZS, OH-LZT, and OH-LZU. Comprehensive inspections will determine whether the fire-retardant coating has been compromised.

According to reports, this grounding resulted in approximately 40 flight cancellations from Monday evening through Tuesday.

The grounded aircraft typically handle around 20 flights daily, connecting Helsinki with key European cities like Rome (FCO), Paris (CDG), and Brussels (BRU). The disruption has impacted an estimated 5,000 travelers.

Finnair has expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and is actively working to minimize delays and rebook affected passengers wherever possible.

Possible Outcomes for Finnair

If subsequent tests reveal that water cleaning did not impact fire safety, Finnair may quickly reinstate operations.

Conversely, if the protective coating has indeed been compromised, the airline could face significant costs in replacing materials across the affected aircraft.

In the meantime, Finnair is collaborating with both the manufacturer and aviation authorities to evaluate the situation and ensure that all safety certifications remain intact before reintroducing the planes to service.
