Passenger Detained on British Airways Flight from Los Angeles to Heathrow
LONDON- A passenger aboard a British Airways (BA) flight was apprehended during a journey from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to London Heathrow (LHR) following a violent episode. The incident required crew members to intervene, disrupting the flight and alarming those on board.
Simon Jones, a 51-year-old from Willington, Bedford, faced Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Monday. He confessed to multiple charges related to his disruptive behavior towards both the airline’s crew and fellow passengers.

British Airways Passenger Arrested
On May 23 of this year, Jones was on a flight from LAX to London Heathrow (LHR). During pre-flight safety checks, he began to behave erratically, clapping and talking loudly. Prosecutor Ashleigh Ettienne informed the court that Jones disregarded attempts to calm him, shouting demands such as, “Give me a f**ing glass for my drink.”*
Witnesses reported that he grew increasingly agitated, repeatedly standing to use the restroom and swearing loudly. When instructed to cease, his behavior only escalated. He shouted at the passenger next to him, threatening violent action over a minor annoyance, prompting that passenger to request a different seat.
The captain intervened, deciding to stop alcohol service to Jones after he continued his disruptive behavior. Eventually, Jones positioned himself near the emergency slide, where he argued with the crew and had to be restrained with handcuffs at the captain’s authorization.
Despite being secured, Jones continued to shout and threaten crew members, escalating tensions on board. He required constant monitoring every 15 minutes until landing, which diverted crew resources away from regular passenger service.

Court Hearing and Sentencing
During the court proceedings, defense attorney Gurbinder Tamana noted that Jones struggles with bipolar disorder and had not taken his medication leading up to the incident. He had also consumed one alcoholic beverage prior to boarding.
Ms. Tamana described Jones’s actions as “completely out of character” and pointed out that he had begun a new medication regimen and found employment at a bar. He entered a guilty plea to the following charges:
- Using threatening, abusive, or insulting language towards a crew member.
- Behaving in a threatening or disorderly manner towards the crew.
- Deliberately interfering with the crew’s responsibilities.
- Exhibiting threatening or abusive behavior causing alarm or distress.
Judge Kathryn Verghis imposed a 12-month community order, which includes 150 hours of community service and 20 days of rehabilitative activities. Additionally, he received a six-month international travel ban and was ordered to pay £400 in costs, a £114 victim surcharge, and £150 in compensation to the affected passenger.
The judge remarked, “The incident in itself was sustained from the very start of the flight… your behavior towards a fellow passenger was completely unacceptable.”

Crew Response and Flight Safety
The court proceedings highlighted that the crew’s responsibilities were “significantly impacted” by the need for ongoing supervision of Jones. This constant monitoring diverted their attention from typical service and operational duties.
British Airways emphasized that prioritizing the safety and security of passengers and crew is paramount. The airline reiterated its policy that any form of disruptive or violent conduct will prompt stringent consequences.
