Wizz Air Cuts A321XLR Orders and Postpones Fleet Growth Plans

Wizz Air Restructures Fleet Plans

BUDAPEST- Wizz Air is revising its future fleet strategy by reducing orders for the Airbus A321XLR and postponing several deliveries. This shift is a response to changing priorities linked to its Budapest operations and the cancellation of its Abu Dhabi route.

The airline is rethinking its approach to long-term growth, aiming to align capacity targets with evolving network demands.

Eight-eight Airbus aircraft deliveries are being delayed, and many of the A321XLR orders are being shifted to the A321neo model. This aligns Wizz Air’s fleet expansion with a more cautious growth strategy focused on Budapest.

Wizz Air Lowers A321XLR Orders

Wizz Air has cut its orders for the Airbus A321XLR from 47 units down to 11. Of the remaining orders, 36 have been adjusted to standard A321neo models, indicating a shift away from long-range growth. According to industry sources, five of the A321XLRs have already been delivered to the airline.

This decision comes in the wake of ceasing the Abu Dhabi operations, a route that was essential for several XLR aircraft.

Wizz Air is focused on refining its network strategy while benefiting from the operational flexibility offered by the A321neo.

Delivery Delays for 88 Aircraft

The airline is also delaying the delivery of 88 Airbus aircraft that were initially scheduled to arrive by fiscal 2030. The new timeline extends their delivery to fiscal 2033.

This adjustment is meant to moderate growth and support a more stable rollout of the fleet over the long term.

Wizz Air assures that its commitment to the backlog of 273 Airbus aircraft remains intact.

Transition to an A320neo Fleet

The airline plans to transition to an all-A320neo family fleet by 2029. This shift supports its ambitious seat capacity growth target of 10 to 12 percent through 2030.

The updated delivery schedule aims to create a more sustainable and profitable growth path, ensuring that Wizz Air expands in an efficient manner.
