HONG KONG- Cathay Pacific (CX) is accommodating passengers traveling to Japan by allowing adjustments to their travel plans. This decision comes after China advised its citizens to refrain from visiting Japan due to escalating political tensions linked to remarks made in Tokyo.
The airline is actively monitoring the situation and aims to assist customers with changes to their Japan-bound itineraries during this challenging time.
Cathay Pacific Makes Travel Policy Adjustments
Cathay Pacific addressed recent comments from Japan’s prime minister regarding potential military deployments in Taiwan, which escalated warnings from Beijing. As a precaution, the airline has opened options for modification for passengers with confirmed tickets to any destination in Japan.
The airline encourages travelers who booked directly through Cathay to reach out via its customer service channels to explore booking changes. Those who arranged their travel through agencies should connect directly with their agents.
However, Cathay has not clarified if fee waivers for cancellations or changes will be applicable, leaving potential costs unknown for now.
This advisory from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs was issued due to perceived risks to the safety of Chinese nationals visiting Japan.
Alongside this, Hong Kong’s Security Bureau offered a similar warning, urging residents to be vigilant and prioritize their safety.
Visitor Trends for Japan
Japan continues to be a popular destination for travelers from Hong Kong. Data from the Japan National Tourism Organization indicates 3.25 million visitors in September, with 149,500 originating from Hong Kong. The number of visitors from the city increased by over 12 percent year on year for that month.
Between January and April, 911,200 residents from Hong Kong took trips to Japan, reflecting a consistent upward trend.
Last year alone, Hong Kong sent approximately 2.68 million visitors to Japan, accounting for about 7.3 percent of the total inbound arrivals.
Increase in Cancellations for Travel to Japan
Chinese airlines, including Air China, China Eastern, and China Southern, are experiencing a significant rise in ticket cancellations for flights to Tokyo Haneda, Tokyo Narita, and Osaka Kansai airports.
This trend follows China’s travel advisory regarding Japan, leading to a marked decline in immediate demand.
The advisory prompted many travelers to cancel existing trips and request no-fee changes from various airlines. This quick reaction underscores how diplomatic tensions can rapidly influence travel trends.
Effects of the Diplomatic Conflict on Travel Habits
Despite China’s claims regarding safety concerns for its citizens in Japan, the situation has shown to be more political than safety-oriented. Airlines swiftly implemented rebooking waivers, leading to widespread cancellations.
Approximately 491,000 tickets were canceled among Chinese airlines during the waiver period, which translates to around 32 percent of planned travel. This marks the most significant increase in cancellations on the China-Japan route since the onset of the pandemic.
A notable spike occurred over the weekend, where cancellations outpaced new bookings by a ratio of twenty-seven to one.
Japan continues to be one of the favored destinations for Chinese travelers, with over seven million arrivals in the first nine months of the year. This figure represents a substantial recovery, amplifying the immediate downturn’s impact.

The ongoing dispute is primarily influenced by political tensions regarding Japan’s stance on Taiwan. Japan remains a highly regarded travel destination, showing no significant risks for Chinese travelers currently.
