Avelo Airlines Reduces Fleet Size and Shutters Multiple US Bases
Avelo Airlines, a budget-friendly carrier, has announced a reduction in its fleet and the closure of several hubs across the United States. These changes, revealed on January 6, 2026, aim to simplify operations and support a transition in the airline’s financial structure.
A spokesperson from Avelo stated, “Avelo Airlines has been recapitalized, and its cash position is now one of the strongest in the U.S. airline industry relative to its size. The airline plans to leverage this cash infusion and enhanced balance sheet to implement its long-term strategy.”
In this restructuring, Avelo will retire six Boeing 737-700 aircraft, centering its operations around the more efficient 737-800 models. The current fleet consists of eight 737-700s and 14 737-800s, as noted by industry sources.
To streamline its operations, Avelo aims to concentrate on four main hubs: New Haven Tweed (HVN), Wilmington New Castle (ILG), Concord Regional Airport (USA), and Lakeland Linder (LAL). Additionally, the airline is set to launch a new base at McKinney National Airport (TKI) by late 2026.
The hubs being closed include Phoenix Mesa Gateway (AZA), Raleigh-Durham (RDU), and Wilmington (ILM). However, Avelo will still offer routes from Raleigh-Durham to New Haven Tweed and Rochester (ROC), and from Wilmington to Nashville (BNA), New Haven Tweed, Tampa (TPA), and Baltimore Washington International (BWI).
According to the Avelo spokesperson, “These changes enable Avelo to focus on sustainably scaling five core bases in 2026 and to prepare the company for growth in the coming years, facilitated by the company’s recent order for up to 100 Embraer 195-E2 aircraft.”
These strategic steps highlight Avelo Airlines’ dedication to enhancing its services and adapting to the evolving landscape of air travel. What do you think about these developments in the airline industry?
